Slightly O/T but Java is there a thread on that tamper? Is it custom built? Love to know more.

Re: Auto-Tamper
Yes, yes it is.Originally posted by 636B63646E680A0 link=1320814204/2#2 date=1320805587holy cow, is that a tamper-press?
I acquired it awhile back when my joints got so bad I could no longer tamp manually. I was at a local espresso machine/service center (I wont say which one to avoid embarrassing them.) getting some parts and just for yits and giggles I asked them if they had any used ones on hand, never expecting an affirmative answer as theyre so rare. But hey, it never hurts to ask! The owner happened to be in the room and said he had an open box one hed give me a deal on. He went and got the unit and it looked brand new and the price he offered it to me for was well below even wholesale price so I was very suspicious and gave it a thorough going over and very quickly found the problem with it. It wasnt maintaining the same tamping pressure. Each tamp was a bit lighter than the previous one.
This was a model Id been looking at buying and so I knew that it had a fully adjustable tamping pressure and I figured odds were real good that the adjusting mechanism just needed some fiddling. I asked them some questions about it and it was very clear that they were clueless as to its operation or that it was even adjustable. So I bought it.
Upon getting it home I dove into it and soon discovered how to move the handle from one side to the other as well as how to adjust the tamping pressure. I fiddled with it and tweaked it a bit and soon had it working perfectly. It has given me flawless service ever since.
Yes there is. The tamper has female threads on it. It is screwed onto the post and then locked in place with a set screw.Originally posted by 59626B646465640A0 link=1320814204/1#1 date=1320796148Java is there a thread on that tamper?
No its not. Its a commercially available unit. Ive seen it sold under a variety of different names/labels but they all seem to use the same model number (Given it by the designer/manufacturer?) of CT 100. It has fully adjustable pressure with the wheel/handle being mountable on either side and the ability to easily change the tamper head. I am in the process of having a custom sized tamper head made up for it as the one it came with is on the small side for my baskets. Theyll be doing the lathing and Ill then do the drilling and tapping here.Originally posted by 59626B646465640A0 link=1320814204/1#1 date=1320796148Is it custom built?

Re: Auto-Tamper
Whats that funny looking black thing on the front of the Brevetto grinder?
Im guessing its for "doing grinder stunts" like backwards somersaults
;D
...back on topic Andy...
Is there a "depth stop" setting so you dose to the same depth too?
How much of a turn travel is it to tamp?

I guess the Brevetto sticker is from an importer or??? Not sure what the deal with it is as its all in Italian. The grinder is a Mazzer Super Jolly with their sticker on it and their logo on the back/customers side.
There is no depth stop, but the tamping pressure is fully adjustable from a few grams up to maybe 20 or even 25kgs of force and (Properly set!) is consistent and repeatable with the same amount of force being applied over the entire travel distance.Originally posted by 103F3528510 link=1320814204/4#4 date=1320818420Is there a "depth stop" setting so you dose to the same depth too?
Rotating the wheel 150 degrees brings it to its maximum extension which is 8mm from the fork. With my naked portafilter a tamp requires only about a 60 degree rotation of the wheel. With a unmodded portafilter its slightly less.Originally posted by 103F3528510 link=1320814204/4#4 date=1320818420How much of a turn travel is it to tamp?

Re: Auto-Tamper
It came with the full height hopper when it was new (20 years ago?) and a friend got me the mini-hopper as a birthday present last year. I never use the hopper unless I have a big crowd of people over.Originally posted by 517E7469100 link=1320814204/6#6 date=1320823101Yeah, it looked like a short hopper Mazzer.
It works nice, especially when you have a bunch of different people dosing and pulling shots. Especially if theyre inexperienced. Short of smashing it with something or dropping it on the floor theres not much to break on them. You cant over spin the wheel and break it as it just slips once it reaches the set pressure. Im sure that over time with enough use the tamping pressure will start to decrease but thats easily fixed by doing an adjustment on it.Originally posted by 517E7469100 link=1320814204/6#6 date=1320823101I know a business owner that is having trouble with a lot of different staff getting the same output. He might be interested in trying one of these out. Ta.
