For a very comprehensive/long analysis of water quality and the effects on both equipment have a look at http://www.big-rick.com/coffee/waterfaq.html

Bombara has a branch that specialists in water softening filters. The filter branch may be in the sponsor list. They are very good I bought some test strips and they really do soften the water. I have very little scale after 18 months using the filters. They are designed to fit in line to a filtered water out let but could probably be linked to a tap. They are around $50 and last for 12 months.
    I am also in Perth.

Bottled Water - Perth Area, very hard water.

I have owned an espresso machine for about a month now and I am already seeing lime scale in the water refilling part of the machine.
I did some reading on water softening systems and came to the following conclusions.
    1. Most filters do not affect hardness in any way.
    2. Filters that do affect hardness are really expensive.
    3. Some softener systems adversely affect coffee flavour.

I was wondering if using bottled water would be a more sensible option?
If so then what brand of water, and what should I look for in the analysis label?
