Re: Single Baskets & Tampers
As I saw it used, I recall it was used as a way of effectively dosing lower when everyone was "bassettified". Simon (aka meniscus puck) used a 58mm Euro with a curved shower screen and straight sided basket to dose lower and finer.

Re: Single Baskets & Tampers
Im getting this euro curve info from elsewhere the wording goes something like " traditional 56mil tamper with a euro curve" cant remember the exact wording. I have baskets here with such a pronounced ridge a 58 mil tamper cant go past, one would need a 56 mil for clearance, I expect a euro curve on a nominal 58 mil tamper may be tightA$%e.I used to call it the tightA$%e tamper!

Re: Single Baskets & Tampers
My lever machine pulls a single shot, use a single basket is the advice from a experienced lever user, hence the enquiry here. The basket/tamper pictured looks to be the LM/VST style, the end result may be different with a lever, or the other more conical style single combined with a full size euro curved tamper may work better. I currently have a Synesso single which, so far has been unsuccesful, but my tamper is flat based and probably unsuitable, Im sort of trying to figure out the best option rather than add to my collection of curios.

I see you in there a lot Andy. Youre like a kid in a candy store. Window shopping is dangerous. You could end up with heaps of stuff you dont need. ;D ;D ;D ;DOriginally posted by 7E515B463F0 link=1337067068/2#2 date=1337076370I bought one from our for sale section earlier in the year out of curiosity.
Back on topic. Im intrigued as to how you would get a decent shot out of that thing. Surely as you say the distance to the showerscreen would be too great?

It works... sorta... you have to pull the shot really early or grind super fine. It might work better with a weighted grind so you can dose the same each time. Typically the dose moves around too much, and I got a basket of mud because its dosed so low below the shower screen but I can see the point if your coffee is $200/kg. At cents per double shot I dont think I can see a use except to sell a second tamp and a LM basket to all your existing customers.
Feel free to try it at the Snobbery one day (or remind me to bring it to a Venez pickup) before you too own another coffee collection curio.

Hi Vic,
The only guy I have ever seen with a euro curve was Simon James. Greg made him one. I used to call it the tightA$%e tamper! ;D

Single Baskets & Tampers
Theres a couple of different types of singles, the LaMazocca/VST style with the inner well having straight sides and another with curved well sides, more a conical style. From what Ive gleaned off the net the tamper for the LM/VST type is about 40mm od to fit into the well. The conical style basket seems designed for a tamper with a Euro style curved base. Any experience out there as to which would be better?Tags: None
