  • LM Filter Baskets for Silvia ?

Ok have been doing even more reading on the basket options for the siliva - La Marzocco Filter Basket ridgeless (with extra heavy duty portafilter spring) seems to be a really good option to achieving an all round good coffee and good crema. I only found one place in the states who only sell to those who bought the machine from them.

Does anyone in OZ (Brisbane - maybe) sell these - not sure if I need a new portafilter although if it has the springs should help ?

    Hi Scollops,

Coffeeparts tends to be really good for all of these minutii. For these baskets, Id call up Pedro and ask.

Note that these are not La Marzocco baskets. They are used by a number of manufacturers, and I suspect that they are actually manufactured by a company called Ascaso in spain. If you speak to Pedro, just ask him for the largest ridgeless double basket he has and make sure that its not a triple. The triple wont fit properly, but the double should be fine.

Im using this basket at the moment and I think that it is way better than the standard ridged LM basket. Pucks knock out really clean, in one piece with no bits left behind. Larger baskets give you a bit more time before your extraction goes blonde. I dont know if they will help that much with crema, but then again Ive never really paid much attention as I generally try to optimise taste rather than crema.

    Hope that helps,

    Luca

      Hi everybody,
      Happy new year.

I am new to the coffee world and recently own a silvia.

I have a question to ask.
Normally I make a single shot using the single basket on silvia, if i want to upgrade my basket should I get a single ridgeless LM basket, double or is it any better option.

Hi Things, and welcome to Coffee Snobs, where Our name says it all

In answer to your question, most of us dont bother with the single basket in Silvia, because the shots are very difficult to get even half good.
Generally we use the double only, because you get a much better extraction from the double.
Now if you dont want a double shot, you can pour half into the drip tray, or you can just use the first half of the pour, which tends to be sweeter and to have more body. Yes you will use a bit more coffee, but youre still saving money compared to buying from a cafe. (And some cafes use double basket to make singles anyway, typically letting excess run into drip tray)

I think that some have tried other single baskets with some success, and if your really want to try one, the best supplier to ask would be coffeeparts as noted above.

However, my suggestion is dont spend money on a bigger single basket, just use the double that came with Silvia. Its more likely that later on you might want a larger double basket, for when youre making two drinks at once

        Regards
        Bullitt

Re: LM Filter Baskets for Silvia ?

i bought a normal size single basket and get equal maybe better results to the silvia double. just do it there only a few bucks. there are also oversize single baskets if your still not happy. it is certainly harder to get consistent results of you use both the double and single and swap between them. a different dosing techniqe is required when I use the single (i cannot updose like in the double without it adjusting the grind) if I were to get a larger double then maybe dosing technique could be more the same for both.

I just use the double all the time, mind you, I do like my caffene kicks :-)

Thanks for these opinions. They were very useful and tommorrow I will try using double basket and feel the differences.

Re: LM Filter Baskets for Silvia ?

ok just for people who were wondering about getting an LM ridgeless from coffeeparts. on the website there are 2 LM 14gm baskets available one has (original) written next to it, which I assume is the ridged one, the other one is ridgeless.

                next to the old rancilio
