    Re: Modifications to Portafilters...

Hole saw wired for me, took ages as it was an old rusty saw blade. After a quick sand the inside is beautifull machine finished brass now. I had 4 portafilters for my 3 group so the choice was easy for me.

I did my original Expobar handle with a drill and hole saw

Purchased the hole saw from Bunnings, worked fine I just finished it off with some fine sandpaper

The hole saws came in a set of 6 different sizes which could be handy.

Best thing is a rotary table on a milling machine, then the handle doesnt spin around like it does on a lathe (unless the handle comes off easily?). Im happy to cut it for you if you cant find anyone locally, Im in Melbourne.

I did mine with a hole saw and an electric drill.

By the time it was finished (about 10-15 minutes) the hole saw was cactus! (It was designed for wood and was purchased at the $2 shop.)

With some smoothing and polishing with wet-and-dry, it looks fine.

I did one of mine with a drill press and hole saw.  Another I had done by a mechanic with a lathe. The difficulty I encountered getting a business to do it is that they need a large lathe if the handle is still attached and most are not really interested in doing it and quote accordingly (almost the same as buying a naked). I found a small operator who did it for $5!

    Cheers

I cut the bottom off mine (an EM6910). Did it using a drill press - drilled a ring of holes and then used a dremil to remove the final bits between the holes and smooth the edge. Came up really well with a bit of patience and care. The metal was quite hard and I did need to used a coolant/lube and sharpen the drill a couple of times. Metal working shops usually charge around $20 to do the job (but this will vary greatly depending on the shop).

any metal engineering shop will do it if you dont trust doing it yourself>

Remember its an irreversible excercise so consider carefully the reasons why you want to do it and or what you are wanting to achieve

    Modifications to Portafilters...

Dont know if this belongs here or not (let me know and I will change it if needed...)

Im looking to cut the bottom off of my portafilter as the ridiculous cost of buying a naked portafilter for my Olympia Cremina is a little un-justifyable right now.

Has anyone had any experience in doing this?

And if so... did someone do it for you, where did you find them, how much did it cost, etc...

    Thanks.
