I tried to ring coffee parts today and it seems they are probably on holiday so I will get back to them in the next week or so.
I was there Thursday arvo lucinda so you must have been unlucky.
    Try again today or Monday.

    Wushoes,

That was a mouthful ;D... If I even look like Im going to break out into engineering speak here at home about anything that even slightly resembles technical jargon, I get sent to Coventry until such time as I apologise for my indiscretion

lol....they manufacture the PF handle so that fatigue (engineering fatigue) will finally cause the handle to break meaning you need a new machine

good engineering! if i was the engineer, id do the same. lol
but then again, it can hardly be considered engineering fatigue as the stresses on the handle arent even stresses that would cause a handle to yield....and more to the exact definition of engineering fatigue, is that it is more like microscopic progressive fracture of the material due to some geometric stress raiser that allows the a pre-existing (microscopic) crack to propagate. another reason is that most materials we test for fatigue are usually metals...never plastics....and metals will always fail after N cycles of loading and reverse loading (where N is somewhere between say 10^6 and 10^10 cycles.) I dont ever believe a home Gaggia classic will ever see that many cycles of loading and unloading from the machine.....and if it did, Im sure the machine would have carked it way before you ever get that far.

Im in the same frame of mind, that if I just replace the handle with the same one, it will only happen again, so Id be very interested to hear what you end up doing!

I had my Classic for over 4 years and only had to replace the handle once.... Not really sure if the machine is meant to last much longer than that anyway [smiley=lolk.gif]

No it was perfect, I tried to ring coffee parts today and it seems they are probably on holiday so I will get back to them in the next week or so.

I definitely do not want that plastic piece of crap handle so I think I will have a chat and see if I can get the new rubber one to fit.

    Oh, another thought Lucinda....

Was your handle loose before it cracked? Mine was for quite a while before it cracked. When I replaced it I made sure that the bolt was always snug but not overly tight. I reckon the relative movement between the handle and the body is what does the damage when you apply the force to lock the pf into the group.

Have to say that my Giottos pfs are much nicer than my old classics one.

    Hi Lucinda.

    Coffee Parts do stock them:

I had to replace mine a while back...

My Silvias handle broke recently and i had to buy a whole new pf..... Looks like the handle does not bolt on but moulded on. I decided it was all too hard to modify, so I bit the bullett and paid up

Still cheaper than upgrading to some shiny machines that Ive seen in the "for sale" section.....one day, one day........

I have to say the new handle feels great. I think it is off Rancilios commercial machines.

    Cheers

    Hey Cindy,

My pf handle did the same thing a couple of weeks ago after having its life extended by copious amounts of gaff tape for far too long...  Im in the same frame of mind, that if I just replace the handle with the same one, it will only happen again, so Id be very interested to hear what you end up doing!

    Cheers

I have had a look on the coffeeparts site and it seems my pf is from the baby gaggia. They do have the rubberised handles that should fit the pf I have but the style of the Classic pf is weird.
    Hey there Cindy,

If you can phone Pedro Im sure he will be able to help you work something out that will be both aesthetically pleasing and durable. Not sure if Pedro and Cilinia are on holidays at the moment or not but definitely worth a call,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Sounds like a good excuse to get out your hole saw and make a conversion to a naked portafilter to check the extractions now and then.

    Re: Broken portafilter handle???

Unfortunately the breaks are as a result ot the plastic being more on the brittle side and not being up to the pressure of constantly knocking of pucks out of the pf so it cracked and broke off luckily for me, Hazbean gave me a pf with a wooden handle that is lovely but I still need to fix this one.

I think I will have to give them a call and see what they say. I do not like the plastic handle, and if I just get the same one, it is going to break again : so I will be in the same boat.

Oh well. Cest la vie 8-)

I dont know the nature of your break, but perhaps a heat-resistant two-part epoxy like JB Weld will repair it.

It does so I may have a look at the measurements and see what coffee parts have.

Cn anybody tell me what the Sylvia handle is like or rercommend something that maybe more rubberised that will not crack and break so easily?

And I agree Wushoes the handle is very ugly, hard to get a good grip on sometimes too because of its shape.
