    I know you cant compare grind settings..... but just to do it anyway, my em0480 is set on 7 - that gives me a good extraction in both sized baskets in my 6910. As is mentioned above, you need to updose. When you say slowly, is it dripping???  Perhaps you are tamping to hard??

    Just to show why you shouldnt compare grind settings, my em480 swings between 25 and the coarsest setting (yes, thats right - off the scale), depending on the beans, weather etc. Just find the best setting for your grinder.

    What he said, and you are right, if its pouring too slow after you have a consistent dosing technique, then the grind is too fine.

    And welcome.

    Hi Mick;

    It is a relatively straightforward question to answer, actually. The first thing that you need to do is to standardise your dose so that you are dealing with more or less the same amount in the portafilter. The easiest way to do this is to dose more than you need, rap the portafilter against the bench three times to settle the grinds down, then use a flat utensil, such as a ruler, to level the mound off. There must be nearly as many dosing techniques as there are people with grinders, though, so use whatever technique works for you. The main thing is that you can repeat your dose, so that if you make ten shots in a row using the same dose and the same grind setting you get the same volume in the same time. Once you have done that, it is simply a matter of adjusting your grind setting coarser or finer to get the pour time and volume that you want. Pay no heed to the actual number that you are grinding at. It is irrelevant, as manufacturers dont assemble the grinders so that the numbers are comparable.

    Cheers,

    Luca

    total newbie

    Gday all, great site. Just a few quick questions. I am completely new at making coffee and have never owned an espresso machine before so here goes, i recently bought an em6910 and a emo 480, i have been experimenting with these new toys and have found myself drowning in bad coffee. my problem is it seems to be taking forever to pull one shot, i.e its pouring very slowly.
    I have a feeling that i may be grinding too fine although im on setting 17. could someone please tell me how do you know if the grind is too fine and what its appearance should be. i know its probably not an easy question to answer but any sort of guidance would be well appreciated.

    cheers,
    mick.

    p.s. dont get me wrong i love my new toys!
