Hi I'm Steve, the founder of the Coffee Catcha.

You can find them on Cafetto's website (sorry I can't post links) and also Bombora's. They will be available on more websites shortly. They are a standard price across the globe (standard meaning fitting with current exchange rates) - $75 in Australia (48 pounds in the UK, $79 in USA etc). Selling in various outlets across New Zealand too.

The Coffee Catcha was launched in New Zealand and is now being used by hundreds of cafes and home barista's. They were designed for high production cafe use (as well as one off use) to help reduce wastage, increase dosage consistency and reduce mess. You can see more info on our website or type Coffee Catcha into YouTube to see testimonials from New Zealand barista competitors who are using them in their cafes (and at competition level).

Feel free to ask me more info.

The Coffee Catcha handle is designed to be bent by the barista to fit any portafilter. You do that once before you start using it.

One thing I notice in the video for the Coffee Catcha is that it does not have a small flange that inserts into the top of the filter basket. That means that you must center it on the portafilter and hold it there while dosing. With the OE you just drop it in and then can set the portafilter down, adjust dose or do whatever with it without dropping the funnel. The OE funnel can be used WITHOUT a portafilter if you want to just dose into the filter basket. I set the filter basket with the funnel in it onto my dosing scale and hold the scale under the grinder spout; dose reached = grinder stopped :-)

The flange of the Coffee Catcha goes around the outside of the basket (rather than the inside like in the OE). We designed it this way for 3 reasons:
            1. So that its easy / quick to scrape the excess grinds back into the grind chamber - its hard to do this when the funnel is on the inside of the basket
            2. We actually did it like this so that the Coffee Catcha sits easier on the portafilter without having to hold it (it self centers and sits by itself whether you use the handle or not)
            3. Some baskets vary in size ever so slightly. Having the Coffee Catcha flange go around the outside of the basket, and allowing it to have a bit of "play" (not a tight fit) means that its universal for 58mm baskets (+/- 1 or 2mm)

You can still use the Coffee Catcha with the basket by itself as you've referred to, but it's important to note that the Coffee Catcha was designed for speed of use (so if you are taking the basket out of the portafilter to weigh your coffee, there may be better tools).

Does EspressoCorp make funnels for every angle of portafilter and diameter of basket?

The Coffee Catcha fits all portafilters that use 58mm (+/- 1 to 2mm) baskets. This covers the majority of commercial espresso machine brands. We will have a second size in the market shortly that fits the rest - 53-54mm baskets (Della Corte, La Spaziale, La San Marco etc). We are also in the middle of developing Coffee Catcha's to fit the other smaller domestic espresso machines.

Note, the Coffee Catcha handle can be bent to fit every angle of portafilter handle (eg. La Marzocco has quite an extreme angle vs say a flatter Rancilio handle). It comes with instructions, but you simply bend it with your hands to fit your portafilter before using it for the first time. This we found was the easiest way to deal with different portafilter sizes when we developed it through the prototype stages with the first 100 cafe/barista users.

Aah! That makes sense. Will it be "bendable" again say if I was to upgrade my existing machine later on?

Yes it sure will! The material is high grade stainless steel and very strong - we designed it to be easy enough to bend lots of times but without breaking (or becoming flimsy/floppy). The handles of the Coffee Catcha's that we use for demo's have been bent no less than 50 times each and are all still going strong.

On the topic of quality / robust products, we made them strong as we believe they will be an integral part of a barista's kit of tools (and that they are to thousands of baristas around the world already). If you use a quality tamp, quality milk jugs and of course high cost / quality machines, all other espresso tools should be of that high quality standard too.

I thought I'd throw in a quick plug for this and no Chris didn't ask me to write this. I'm a sucker for a gadget and when I saw this on youtube I had to have one. What you don't see on the youtube videos is the groove on the bottom (see pic) which gives it stability when you place it on the basket. I dont need to even hold the catcha while dosing. I have no mess at all on my benches now. The Macap M4D is not a messy grinder but the coffee catcha has completely tidied up my routine with no loss of time. I couldn't do without it now. Yes its expensive and yes a yoghurt funnel or commercially produced funnel will do a similar job but not as neat. I don't use it for scraping as I use timed doses from my Macap but for others who fill and level this is a great tool.
