  • Need help with an important decision!

Hello All  - Im brand new and needing expert opinion regarding purchasing a quality espresso machine and grinder.
Facts: I have around 3k and love being hospitable.
We will at times need to make 50 coffees (from short black all the way through) in quick succession and at other times just one or two.We will enjoy perfecting the art on the one hand but will need to be able crank out the coffees on the other.
The local merlo coffee shop is doing the ECM giotto and Mini Mazzer for $3,100 and they also have various Bezzera models. 2 of my friends have the La Scala Butterfly and we love the coffee they make. Value for money is a key element.

    Who knows?
Any expert opinion will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Smackeroo

Hi SMACKEROO and welcome to CS.

50 coffees in quick succesion???   I reckon youd better have a chat with one (or more) of the site sponsors here. Not only will they give you good advice but Im sure theyll do you a good deal too.

I recently bought a Giotto/Mazzer Mini combo from Chris (2muchcoffeeman) at Talk Coffee. He is great to deal with and knows his stuff too.

There is just so much to choose from...Good luck!

I think the general consensus is to figure out what grinder you are going to buy and then decide what machine you want to buy with the money you have left over.

The sponsers will do you a good deal on both. Ask Chris from Talk Coffee. Also, Luca from Veneziano Caffe has some mazzer minis to sell at the very low price when packaged with a prosumer machine. See here (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1162963842/30#30).

Basically contact the sponsers. Have a look at the links on the left hand side of the page and send them a private message. They will sort you out.

for that much coffee I would be considering a 2 group machine. its justified, sounds like your parties are hard work though. 8-)

Smakeroo, if youre in Brisbane check out Barazi at Coopers Plains (a site sponsor). They supply the equipment to Merlo, so will probably do you a deal on the Giotto/Mazzer combo. Just tell them youre a coffeesnob. Theyll also demo the units for you just to help you make up your mind.

The La Scala and Giotto should be roughly similar in performance. Both have similar sized boilers and use the E61 group. Nevertheless, each machine will have its ideosyncracies, so you really should try before you buy.

Both these machines will give you significant entertainment potential. The next logical step up would be a fully plumbed in machine (quieter to run and you dont need to continually fill the reservoir and empty the drip tray). Barazi may be able to help you with a fully plumbed BZ35 and Mazzer combo for around the 3k mark, but youll really have to give them a call and have a chat.

          Cheers,

          Mark.

...and those little ideosyncracies do make big differences. The La Scala is a good machine, but expertly operated you will see a difference between them. CSers beware- comparing spec. sheets will not always lead you to a better machine because they have no information on machine architecture- and this is CRITICAL. The answer is always resident in the cup. The two machines mentioned are in different price brackets- and for good reasons...

I know this is a dumb question, but why 50 coffees at one time? Is this for visitors or a small cafe or something. 50 is a lot of people.

Yeah- seems we have conflicting needs here...Domestic Prosumer or Commercial?
