  • Tamper for BSWF100 (Breville Single Non-Pressurised Single Wall Basket Filters)

    Hi all,

I am wondering what is the exact tamper size I should get for this the BSWF100, I can't seem to accurately measure the basket, all I know it is either between 50 mm or 51 mm.

I have asked a vendor on eBay who sells these baskets and he/she said that they use a 51 mm tamper, however I recently also e-mailed Breville who stated a 50 mm tamper.

So I am asking here to determine if anyone actually does use these exacts baskets and hence if so what exact size tamper you using.

    Thank you!

Hi uaena, I have a pair of these and mine measure 51.5mm I.D. using a pair of vernier calipers which I trust to less than 0.1mm.

I am currently using a 51.3 mm tamper which is a good fit in both the baskets. It was a 52 mm originally, and as such it was too big. I turned it down until it was a neat, but not tight fit, and that is what it measures now.

The crappy plastic tamper that came with my machine measures 50.4mm and it is a sloppy fit in theses baskets.

Perhaps there could be some variation in different lots of these baskets, and maybe Breville is playing it safe by recommending the 50mm size. Or maybe the person who answered your email just got it wrong - your guess is as good as mine on this.

    Cheers, Leo.

Back when I used those baskets I used a 51mm tamper. As Leo says the Breville plastic job is ~50mm so that's likely what they'd recommend. But the 51mm fits much better.

Thank you for your response think I might be considering the 51 mm for the better fit.

Thank you for your response, I think I will be considering the 51 mm, the reason I am asking around was due to buying a 52 mm tamper that did not fit in these baskets, which I forgot to add am using on a Sunbeam EM5900.

I am planning to get which is available in both 50 mm and 51 mm according to eBay vendors.

I am planning to get one of those stainless steel tampers which are about $30 that are available in both 50 mm and 51 mm according to eBay vendors.

If you already have a 52mm tamper, they can easily be turned down to 51 mm (or a bit over) as I did, but of course you need to have access to a lathe or know someone who does. Could be worth asking around.

Correct, manufacturers normally supply a loose tamper, I assume this is in case basket sizes change between batches (as they invariably do). 51mm is a fairly common size for lower-end machines but if you can, take your baskets with you and try the tamper first to make sure as yours could be smaller. If you're buying online that's obviously more difficult but you could take a chance.

I assume you're working on a fairly limited budget but in case not, what we do in these situations is either 1) you send your basket to us and we supply a tamper that's made to fit, or 2) purchase the Krups unpressuried double basket with your order and we supply that and a fitted tamper. You're going to be looking north of $100 though for either of these options, so if a perfect fit isn't so important then the first paragraph would be your best bet.

Recently, got the tamper, and can confirm that the 51 mm does indeed perfectly fit, thank you all for your contribution!
