Thanks yelta. I had only put new batts in it a couple of days ago, they were 800 mAh, just charged up some 1000 mAh and tried weighing one of my chooks eggs, tried ten times and got initial weight of 79.08 +/-.01. When left aftera few seconds started going up or down slowly, so better than before, but not weighing past 97 g (300 g scale).
With a six and four year old im pointing the finger in their direction as i found the scales out of their sleeve with the cover off. Six weeks of school hols to go.
Fair enough, certainly sounds like a problem with the scales.

Murphy has been busy.
Had a beer brew day yesterday, went to weigh out some Ca salts (2.5 g each) and the scales went crazy, ended up using half teaspoon each, strangely they were working again later for hop additions. Had them for two years, ordered new ones off evikbay, $7.15 including postage, cant complain at that price.
I have some shop type scales, 35 kg max in one gram increments for weighing grain, also from the evilbay, about $50 delivered, lot of guys on AHB use them.
I have a little 'pocket' set with "digital scale" written on the plastic cover (which comes off when in use). Probably the same ebay type ones mentioned on here. I use mostly for travel or at work. Great for aeropress brewing
At home I recently scored (for my birthday) the Hario drip scales. I use for weighing the coffee to dose the grinder, and also for my brew methods (v60, aeropress, ccd, syphon, etc). The syphon fits right on top quite nicely. I can't say the quality is as good as I thought it would be. Personally I think Hario should stick to glassware.
look for a scale that doesn't shut down on you (auto shut off), or has a long time out (5min). Timer is a bonus if you are in to filter brewing, and back-lit screen is a bonus if you are in to brewing in the dark (extreme brewing! haha)
I'm looking to get one of those commercial scales that have a built in scoop in the tray. Like a grain/rice scale? For bagging coffee. I can't find them anywhere
I've been using a set I bought on E*ay about 2 years ago, pretty cheap, about $15 as I recall, zero to one hundred grams 0.1 gram accuracy, they do the job well.
Thanks everyone. Very useful info. I am tempted to get the eBay ones. I know they are cheap and you get what you pay for. But I will not be relying on the scake everytime. I only intend to use it as a guide to improve my ability to estimate the amout of coffee I use. I like to think coffee making is more of an art than chemistry follwing a precise recipe.
I use my hop scales for brewing, only 0-300 g range but measure to two decimal places, use two aaa batteries. Got them off evilbay @$15 delivered. Excellent for bean weighing as very accurate.
I did a forum search but I could not find anything related. Can you adivse me on what type of scales are precise and accurate enough (ideally 0.1g precision) to measure coffee beans.
Thanks
If you can find a set that is a) big enough / has enough weighing capacity to allow you to put a whole (filled) portafilter on it and b) uses regular batteries you'll be happy. Of course, if you only wish to weigh before grinding, size doesn't matter. Mine is made by a company called 'Salter'
P.S. I don't usually weigh beans, but if my other half is going to be making a fair few coffees by herself she finds it useful to know what weight corresponds to an acceptable dose (for a given bean / grind setting).

There are several available on "evilbay". I got a set called "postal & jewelers digital scales" and they were about $14 .
They weigh up to 1 kg in increments of 0.1g, but are only accurate to + or - 0.1g, . I checked them with some balance scale weights and they are accurate to within the quoted limits - but no better than that.
However they would be accurate enough for coffee ( for most people anyway)
