  • Brita Jug filtered water

    Hi all.

Just wondering if you can store brita jugs in a cupboard for a couple of days with water in them without any detrimental effects on water quality?
Due to the premium nature of available refrigerator real estate in our place, my wife said I cant have any room to put a jug. (I reckon she is still a bit peeved that she lost some bench space when G and Mi arrived.. :P)

Up till now Ive been using tap water in G but I want to move to filtered water pronto.

I would figure it would be ok for a few days so long as it is sealed pretty well, but Im not a water expert. They store water for our water cooler in big bottles (though they are sealed) for weeks in the office.

My Brita jug is used for drinking water as well so it always has a place in the fridge. Can you humbly suggest that it has a dual purpose?

I go through a jug in a day or two and also leave it on the bench.
It also serves as a reminder to refill the machine at night.
Then I just top up the Brita jug until next time.

Leaving it on the bench made more sense to me than putting it in the fridge.
I dont need to put fridge cold water into my machine and would think that Id be wasting energy if the boiler did a top up with the colder than needed water.

I suppose you could decant from the jug into a sealed container, and keep the container under the bench!

I recently upgraded to a tap filter - exclusively dedicated to Bazza (the Bezzera!)

Yeah I agree, unless youve got the biggest size Brita jug, you will be going through the water every day or two anyway, cos they really only store half as much as the size of the jug (latest ones dont need the filter to be flooded all the time BTW).

Actually we have similar problem with lack of space in the fridge, I was going to leave the jug out , but my wife wanted it in the fridge, although sometimes it has to stay out, and I havent noticed any problems.

We have 2 of the 2L Brita jugs.
They get a bit of a hammering as I use them to filter water to put into 2 other 2L jugs for the fridge (we drink a bit of chilled water) and then they get filled again to service the Minore. When you combine the refills for the fridge with the coffee machine, the jugs are lucky to stay full and resting for more than 1 day.

Just keep an eye on the water. Youll see if anything is developing in there!

I will say, make sure you give them a proper clean every now and then. They do accumulate stuff over time. We run ours (minus filter) through the dishwasher as required (away from the hot element of course).

whats this about Bullit...? i was unaware of any special requirments. i just fill the reseviour, let it filter, then tip the filtered water into silvia. then the jug just sits there empty and waits for the next use.!?!

am i supposed to have water in the jug all the time..?

                    Re: Brita Jug filtered water

Cant see anything wrong with keeping filtered water--or any water -- in closed containers for a few days.

In any case, it is preferable, much preferable, to keep the cartridge wet with unfiltered water. That is, tap water containing chlroine.

The chlorinated water prevents bacterial growth in the flter material.

Otherwise, use a filter which has silver-coated activated charcoal.

Brita says that if that is not possible, the cartridge can be wrapped in plastic film and refrigerated for a week or so.

I went and bought one of the 2.9l jugs yesterday and I agree that a couple of days at the most wont hurt. Heres to cleaner water in my boiler!

                      Cheers All

I use only Brita water in my machine as well... its used for Drinking as well.. so it gets refilled multiple times in the day.

                          Re: Brita Jug filtered water

Absolutely.  In fact, I am quite surprised by the amount of filtered water we go through, jug after jug, just to make 60 mlls of coffee!!

Some is recycled.  Water which comes out of the steam wand  priming to refill the boiler  goes straight back into the tank.

Water which flushes the group, portafilter and basket goes into a bucket for the garden, along with drip tray waste.  Any water which comes from the group is considered grey water for garden use.

                            Robusto,

Never thought of using used coffee water this way (Although I have recycled water plumped in - the plant is 500meters from my house). Dont have much of a garden for the used grinds though - so in the bin it goes. At least its biodegradable ;-)

Correct me if Im wrong... but I recall certain well-respected CSers saying that Brita filtered water shouldnt be used for coffee machines? Only softened water or something along those lines. Im still an offender in this regard but seems Im not alone?
