  • Removing/Cleaning GH spout

    Mornin.
just cleaning my machine now and i noticed alot of thick sticky coffee oil stuck in the little dimple of the spout (before the coffee is then seperated into 2 shots). Should i be removing the spout so i can clean this gunk out..?
im sure i read a previous thread some time back that if you did remove the spout it was very hard to get it back to position.
so far i have benn able to scrape a little out with a paper clip.

    thoughts.?

    Cheers

    KoNG,

Yep, you want to get that gunk out.... but I dont know about removing/replacing the spout....

The best method to clean all the PF, baskets etc is to soak them in a solution of espresso cleaning agent (the stuff used for back flushing)

If you dont / cant backflush your machine you should take off the showerscreen and soak it in that solution as well....

Espresso cleaner will restore all the bits to shiny new condition.

If you have a sturdy vice/clamp and are happy to do a little fiddling (perhaps) when you screw it back on, you can try taking the spout off (presuming the PF is actually of that kind of design).

However, I have so far found it just as effective to soak the PF in a solution of espresso cleaner and water for about 10-20 minutes and then give the bits a bit of a scrub and rinse.

To get into the spout area, we have a dishbrush originally designed for baby bottles and teats. There is a very small brush on one end for the teats and this fits into the spout area.

Another option which I have used in the past is a cotton bud (the long ones that people always stick in their ears against doctors wishes).

      Hope that helps.

      Brett.

I have a small brush from Coffee Parts that I bought to clean the steam wand.
It fits nicely through the double spout holes and helps remove any stubborn gunk loosened by the cleaning solution.

          thanx peoples,
i wasnt keen to remove it (javaB i have silvia....)
but espresso clean definately wasnt getting this stuff out
i usually soak in espresso clean every 3 weeks or so
and rinse the GH in hot water after every shot, but this stuff was really thick and stuck in the dimple
i was actualy noticing that my shot were pouring to the left spout more than the right, which made me think there must be a hole dimple in there.

as fatboy suggested the cottonbud was the best solution after the soak in espresso clean. it was still a nightmare.

ill be keeping a closer eye on the build up.

Used to do this weekly with the Mokita and never experienced any build-up what-so-ever.... I think three weekly is a bit long between drinks there KoNG,
