    Hi all,

    Long time lurker, barely posted anything.

    I've been running a Sunbeam EM6910 with the EM0480 grinder for a few years now.
    After searching for a much more consistent grind (throwing away 2 shots each morning because the grinder had changed 3 steps overnight got quite cumbersome), I've bought a Mazzer Mini Manual from one of the site sponsors.

    Firstly, I'm amazed that in 2 - 3 shots, I'm getting a much better flow than I was ever able to on the EM0480.

    The shots look good (to my untrained eye at least), getting a slightly restricted pour, roughly 60 ml in 30 seconds in a double basket.

    What I'm not seeing is that rich red / brown colour at the start of the shot, and being as I've been playing with my scales since getting the grinder, I've found I'm only using 14 grams in the double basket.

    I tried dosing 18 grams this morning, and it was nearly 1 - 2 mms from the top of the basket, putting it in the group head was tough.

    Pulling the shot choked the machine and after removing the PF from the group head, the puck had swollen, cracked and the bottom hadn't been wet at all.

    My question for you fine people, that clearly know a lot more than I do, is do I need to increase my dose?
    With 14 grams, I'm seeing a screw imprint and shower screen in the puck, which makes me think I'm on the money, but the lack of red / brown colour and the fact that I know I'm 4 grams under normal dosage, I think I do.

    If I do need to, how would I go about getting 18 grams in the basket, I presume a finer grind may assist, but wouldn't that choke the machine?

    For what it's worth, what's in the cup tastes good, but the crema is quite thin and dissipates quickly, and I'm just trying to learn and improve to make the best coffee I possibly can.

    Try 16 grams.
    See what kind of impression you get in the puck and decide from there if you need to dose lower.
    Then adjust your grind to get the best pour.

      I mucked around a little on the weekend, trying a coarser grind, I somehow managed to fit 21 grams in the basket.
      A lot more flavour, managed to tweak the grind to get a decent pour, had much more flavour, thanks!

        I've been using 16gms in my double - almost always I get a nice rich coffee flavour, even from the el cheapos I keep for Nescafé drinkers. (which they LOVE by the way ) I'm using the EM0480 grinder with the shim fix. I keep meaning to use Ray_C's fix to make it a better grinder but life keeps getting in the way. Real soon now.

        I've noticed that each type of bean has (sometimes) radically different settings - the Vittoria from Coles grinds at 5 while the luvverly Phoenix beans from the local roaster grind at 13 - 14. Recently the Phoenix has come down to about a 10 or 11 - I've been skimping on the coffee a bit and they have aged. le sigh... Flavour's not quite as rich now either, but it's still light years ahead of the el cheapos.

          Thanks all for your advice. After 2 - 3 weeks of using the Mazzer, I'm really impressed with it.

          Finally found my dosing to be around 21 grams and making fantastic coffee.

          I can't believe how consistent the grinds are, I haven't had to adjust the grind collar for just over a week (haven't changed since I dialled the grinder in for my beans)

          Next step will be a HX machine, sometime next year I suspect, until then the MM has breathed some new life into my 6910.

            Let me preface this by saying there is way better advice on the forum than me.

            Your original issue, with the 0480 grinder changing 3 stops overnight: Just checking you cleaned out the retained grinds for the shot in the morning?


            A secondary question for those in the know: the em6910 has an uncalibrated pressure guage. ( a 'happy guage'!) where if the needle is in the right place, you have a nice coffee... apparently. Does any one know roughly what this pressure is (for the em6910) in real life?

              I was cleaning out the grinds before starting each morning, but it did seem to retain a fair amount of grinds, so thanks for checking :-)

                Hey mate,

                The thing that has improved consistency, crema, body and ease of dosing in my EM6910 is my 22g VST basket. I only have the e480 but the vst helps a lot.

                I have a dosing method that works for me: overfill, tap, scrape. This gives me roughly 22g and the basket comes out with ease to weigh your grinds.

                Pair this (or any ridgless vst) with the MM then I'm sure you'll get that deep rich colour.

                  Thanks Mike, I've seen the VST mentioned a lot before, but have never been sure if they'd make a difference on the 6910.

                  I've also been confused by ridged and ridgeless and the sizes available.

                  The 21g basket fits in the standard portafilter?

                  If I was to get a HX machine, is it likely to fit?

                    I can't stand using the standard basket anymore! Haha
                    To fit the 6910, you need the ridgless. The 22g fits quite comfortably but that's because the portafilter is quite deep. Others, not so deep unless you invest in a naked portafilter where there is no bottom.
