  • DIY knockbox, not finished but works

    Hello everyone,

Heres a quick DIY knock box which cost me around 5$. The whole shape is based on...hmm I wonder if you can guess what it is based on

Anyway its made of a PCV pipe, which I had to cut down a bit to create the angled top. I also used a piece of fi16mm PCV pipe, painted black which had a piece of hose pulled over. The bottom cap was also made from PCV, but this time I had to work a bit more, cut out a round piece and glue a side piece to it. I cut out two holes for fingers in the bottom to remove and empty the knockbox easily.

I plan to sand the sides (already sand them down a bit) and use some filler to smooth everything down, but I cant find the right kind that would stick to PCV well. I also plan to add two seals on the bottom and top edges to cushion the impact and make the whole thing better looking (cant find the right seals anywhere).

    Anyway heres how it looks:

    Cheers,
    dsc.

Nice work - the curves at the bottom are a nice touch.

Good one DSC. Puts my cut-down pool chemical container knock-box to shame (maybe that is why its kept out of sight under the sink!).

              Hello everyone,

              Thanks for the kind words

It looks a bit crappy, but with some filler and sanding it should be nice and smooth. Those seals would also add some detail, but I cant find the right ones anywhere.

              Cheers,

I always wonder, why do we need knockbox at home? cant you just chuck it out straight of to the garbage bin?

let me know reasons & might buy one of them. :P

Well coffee pucks dont necessarily come out all that easily.... requiring you to give a tap on something solid.... but not so hard as to damage your basket... :-/

You could tap on the edge of a plastic bin..... and with a bit of luck most of the puck might make it into the bin..... you could hose the basket out under a tap.... and you wont squirt too much up the wall.... you could train your dog to lick it out I suppose.... ;D

But why not use the device that all professional baristas (and most of we wanabees) use... A knockbox... a quick tap of the PF and basket on the hardened rubber covered rod... the puck comes out cleanly.... all of it falls into the knockbox... job done quickly, efficiently and no mess...

In answer to your question ....Why not???? : :

haha thanks guys! i might get one of the grindstein one, still thinkin and thinkin...

Because I thought that when I chuck it straight to the bin, it will have some effect to the environment. See, i am sort of enviro type of bloke that cares about the earth. haha

If you are environment friendly - even more reason for a knockbox.... used pucks make great fertilizer (especially around roses and citrus - things that like acid soil)

And slaters seem to love em too.

Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works

                          Ola,

caffaddict: I used to think the same, why do I need a knockbox, I can just use my garbage bin. Two things made me change my mind:

                          - the bin is sometimes full, which means you either find another way of getting rid of the puck or you sink your PF into the trash (yummy)

                          - I was able to build the knockbox myself and I love DIY, plus its cheap as dirt

You might want to try DIYing a bit or take another look around the knockbox market, the Grindenstein is pretty small...

JavaB: I remember reading a thread about reusing used pucks but I cant find it. I already use them around my backyard though

                          Cheers,
                          dsc.

Very nice, I splurged and bought myself a lovely red one at SC yesterday - why is it that I can never walk out of there without buying something coffee related?
