Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works
Hello,
Lovey thanks for your ideas, the stuff you linked to looks pretty good, but I bet I will have a hard finding it. I already found some seals that would work great on this knock box but sadly the company that sells them didnt respond to any of my emails.
Lucinda: whats SC?
Cheers,
dsc.

Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works
Very nice, I splurged and bought myself a lovely red one at SC yesterday - why is it that I can never walk out of there without buying something coffee related?

Gday dsc,
very nice, professional looking project there.
In relation to the top and bottom seals, I dont know if this is what youre after, but check this link out.

It comes in rolls or bags and is usually available from electrical supply shops.
Good luck with the project.

Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works
Ola,
caffaddict: I used to think the same, why do I need a knockbox, I can just use my garbage bin. Two things made me change my mind:
- the bin is sometimes full, which means you either find another way of getting rid of the puck or you sink your PF into the trash (yummy
)
- I was able to build the knockbox myself
and I love DIY, plus its cheap as dirt
You might want to try DIYing a bit or take another look around the knockbox market, the Grindenstein is pretty small...
JavaB: I remember reading a thread about reusing used pucks but I cant find it. I already use them around my backyard though
Cheers,
dsc.

Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works
If you are environment friendly - even more reason for a knockbox.... used pucks make great fertilizer (especially around roses and citrus - things that like acid soil)Originally posted by caffaddict link=1173052697/0#10 date=1176557284Because I thought that when I chuck it straight to the bin, it will have some effect to the environment. See, i am sort of enviro type of bloke that cares about the earth. haha
And slaters seem to love em too.

let me know reasons & might buy one of them. :P
Well coffee pucks dont necessarily come out all that easily.... requiring you to give a tap on something solid.... but not so hard as to damage your basket... :-/
You could tap on the edge of a plastic bin..... and with a bit of luck most of the puck might make it into the bin..... you could hose the basket out under a tap.... and you wont squirt too much up the wall.... you could train your dog to lick it out I suppose....
;D
But why not use the device that all professional baristas (and most of we wanabees) use... A knockbox... a quick tap of the PF and basket on the hardened rubber covered rod... the puck comes out cleanly.... all of it falls into the knockbox... job done quickly, efficiently and no mess...
In answer to your question ....Why not???? :

Re: DIY knockbox, not finished but works
Hello everyone,
Thanks for the kind words
It looks a bit crappy, but with some filler and sanding it should be nice and smooth. Those seals would also add some detail, but I cant find the right ones anywhere.
Cheers,
dsc.

Good one DSC. Puts my cut-down pool chemical container knock-box to shame (maybe that is why its kept out of sight under the sink!).
