  • hello and is this worth the $$

hi all, my name is jamie, long time lurker first time poster.

Could someone tell me if this represents good value? Everything in the pic is for sale as one for A$3000 the machine is an ASTORIA, not sure how what model or how old but in perfect working order. I know nothing about the grinder. the bench has a granite top. I only really want the machine, so if that seems a reasonable price for the machine alone then i guess its a good deal. The machine won't be working to hard, small start-up cafe.

    many thanks

I think you need a minimum number of posts to stick a pic up - 5?

just upload to the countless image hosts on the interwebz and posting a link would be a heap faster I imagine?

And you'd be wrong. Trying to avoid the anti-spam measures by posting a link rather than a picture won't work. The easiest thing to do is upload the pic here. Fewer clicks and the image won't disappear when the hosting site deletes it, changes the path, or goes under.

                    pics abit small...

i'd say first of all if you're after something that big remember they usually run off 15-20a power supplies... and need to be plumbed

also 5k sounds a little steep for a pre-owned commercial machine that has a few years on it. have you had a look on gumtree for similar setups?

those switches look circa late 1990's, early 2000's.
if you're going to view it, make sure you take the time to pull the covers off and inspect at the very least, the pipes going in and out of the boilers and where the heating elements run into. things can look deceivingly nice and neat from the outside.... also maybe even getting a heating element out to look inside the boilers.

I think it's 3k not 5k but even at that price, it's too much.

"perfect working order" ?.... If you're going to put it in a cafe you should start off with a fully serviced machine, with at least, new seals
                      and anything else required.

A 3 group Astoria went for $260 over 'at the bay' this week.....................

You couldn't put any value on the grinder until you know it's age, work and service history.
You would have to check with your council if the furniture is ok to put in your shop, if you can't it's practically worthless.

You mention a small start up cafe, so a 2 group should be adequate.
There are a few machines available, if you want a high quality industry workhorse then a La Marzocco Linea
would suit. Astoria Plus 4u, Expobar Ruggero are two others. There are more.

Personally, I would stay away from most single boilers but that doesn't mean you have to.
Have you heard of Silver Chef? Along with their twin, Go Getta, they are cafe equipment rent /buy people.
Most well known commercial machine suppliers will work in with them.

                          Where is the cafe?

i was wondering when that question would come out. the cafe will be in santiago chile, where i live. coffee is a big part of chilean life, but to me, an expat australian, it is rubbish compared to that of australia. while i have made a few thousand coffees in my life using an already set up machine, i know very little about the art of a barista. i don't believe there to be any problem with the available beans, although i will need to be selective, as most i've tasted seem strong and bitter, which is not for me, i prefer a smooth sweeter brew. the problem is how it is made. at best, a take away cup is 50/50 water milk ratio. the smaller the cup the less milk, yuk. and zero texture to the milk. now i do appreciate a country has its own cultures and tastes but i know of many chilean nationals visiting australia for what ever reason and saying they were completely gobsmacked by how good our coffee is in australia. the coffee processes here in chile are probably closer to its origins than that of australia but to me that don't make it better. so having said all that any help and tips would be greatly appreciated. i will post this in a new thread as the topic has now changed somewhat.
