  • Sunbeam Ant-calc filter

Anyone know if the EM69101 filter is able to be opened? I found a site selling 1kg of ion-exchange resin for $24 and this would probably last a lifetime if it was just a matter of refilling it.

The cartridge has "Do not open cartridge on it" - so I'm guessing it can (although whether it can be put back together or not is another question...)

If the cartridge just contains ion exchange resin then there's no need to open it, just recharge it by flushing it with saltwater.

'Flushing' means dropping it into slat water for a while - my understanding is it changes colour when 'recharged' but I got rid of mine when I first got the machine, before I found out the recharge was simple. And with RO water I didn't bother with a new one.

Well I can get a lifetime supply of the same stuff for approx the cost of one new filter, so if I can open it and refill then I don't need to worry about recharging or other impurities/degradation of the material and so on.

Unless you're using a batch of beans with strong caramel notes - salted caramel espresso!

The resins typically do not come pre-charged so you'll have to do the same soaking process anyways.

                Hi Darkfalz

My 2 6910's: The friend that recommended the 6910 for home had prewarned me about these, and opening the carton was enough "proof" via the stench to agree with him.
First thing I did was to take the filter out (eventually gave them both to Hilton SB repairer "as new"). Second thing was to hit the plastic tank with a fairly strong detergent & hang it outside for a couple of days (upside down in shade) to ventilate. It still needed a few coffees to get rid of all contaminants. All they do is taint the coffee AFAIAC.

FWIW, I would spend the $$$'s ensuring the water is really superb before it gets anywhere near the machine. FYI, I use "double filtered" rainwater (i.e. in & out of the tank) from a very clean location & a sheltered clean roof. RO or at least pre-filtered water of some type could also be on the list.

Search for "Jim Schulman's Insanely Long Water FAQ" (downloaded it years ago, do not have current url) if you want more info. An interesting, quite controversial read at the time.

                Hope this helps

It might not smell nice but there's no reason to think it's leaking into the water or affecting taste of the coffee I would think.

                      Hi Darkfalz
Trying a friend's "filtered" 6910, it certainly did affect the coffee's taste. The machine was four months old, so the plastic container had lost its odour. Using the same beans as I have plus some of my rainwater, it was undrinkable to me. When I pulled the filter out and gave the machine a quick flush: viola, no more taste nasties. The friend was stunned at the difference and had to make a coffee himself to ensure I had not pulled a swifty (not unknown).

Worth a try, however it does mean you must use pristine water or risk rapid scaling / potential destruction.
