diy naked portafilter?

Hi ninja, thanks for the tips but i've since hacked the crap out of it with my dremel. It's looking pretty nasty at the moment. Grinding down brass with the dremel is a painfully slow task. If anyone reads this... my advice is don't try to dremel yourself a naked portafilter, it's not worth the effort.

No the brass used for this sort of thing isn't soft. There is such a thing as soft brass though. You need a bi-metal holesaw designed for cutting metal. If the drill isn't super cheap it should have a 1-2 speed selector switch. Set it to 1 (slow) for using holesaws larger than about 32mm. If you don't have specific cutting oil I would use water over cooking oil, though if you get a better holesaw and be patient you won't need any.
Where abouts are you located?
I did my breville a couple of weeks ago. If I remember when I'm home tomorrow I'll have a look and see if I have a 58mm holesaw.

As Java said, speed and pressure are important. Using a drill press with good slow speed torque is the best way - but most don't have access to one.
If no press, then make sure you clamp the PF to a bench and put some weight into the drill, but not too much break it or make it uncontrollable.
The way I did mine was to use a normal 3mm drill bit and drill holes all around the base as close together as possible, knock the base out, then use a burr bit on the drill to make it smooth.
If you look at the e61 PF for sale on this forum at the moment, you'll see the finished result. Took about an hour.

There are quite a few here who have diy'd their own naked, many with a hole saw. A search of the site will no doubt turn up quite a few posts on the matter.
Drill speed and pressure are very important when drilling metal.
Java "Yup! Well over 100!" phile

I had the same problem with my first one which was only 51mm and aluminium! So my latest one (brass) I had machined. Neat as!
Are you using a cutting fluid at all?

diy naked portafilter?
Anyone made one here? Trying to chop up my old Silvia portafilter with a hole saw from Bunnings. Ten minutes in and I've removed about half a mm. Hole saw was labelled for wood and soft metals. Guess brass isn't soft haha. Might have to try the dremel next.Tags: None
