We should invite Jaycar and Dick Smith Electronics to become sponsors, given the number of references we make to them!!

    Hi Brian,

Welcome to CoffeeSnobs by the way [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. You can measure it reasonably accurately using the hardware and method described by JavaB above. The hardware can be obtained from Jaycar or Dick Smiths for usually less than $50 all up and can be used to assist with other facets of the coffee process too, like Roasting for example. There are two criteria that must be within the narrow confines of acceptability in espresso brewing, one is brew pressure and the other is brew water temperature (as you obviously appreciate) and it really is worth getting both of them "right" to help with producing coffee that literally explodes with flavour. I would recommend trying to acquire a DMM and T/couple, you wont be sorry.....

There are a number of ways to determine brew pressure and a search of the forum will reveal these to you, one method is quite simple and others require the acquisition and installation of hardware or purchasing ready made purpose-built PortaFilters with pressure gauges. Anyway, thats another story,

    Mal.

Its definately not "high" brian, if anything you may think its a little low, but as all the others have mentioned.. you wil lose alot of heat by the time it drops into the jug from the group. Had the boiler light just flicked off.?

To measure brew temperature you really need a "bead type" thermocouple probe (with a digital multimeter).... and this needs to be right in the group assembly...

Water cools as it falls into the jug, the jug will absorb heat and cool the water, a milk thermometer needs to be immersed in fluid for most of its length - and will absorb heat.... and it wont respond quick enough also....

And that is why the indicated temperature is lower than it should be.

You want the water anywhere between 92 and 96 deg roughly.

Looks about right... reality is you cant measure water temp from the group like this... way inconclusive.
