    thanks for the info

is it best to send my pota-filler to the guys at pullman tampers or is measuring it myself enough.
Reading their blog it seams its not as simple a case of just saying i need a 58mm tamper
    John,

Unless you can measure the basket very accurately with vernier callipers.. (following Gregs instructions) Id send off your basket.

Gregs tampers are a precision fit into the basket (barely any gap).... so unless you get the measurement "spot on" you will either have a tamper which wont fit - or one which is too small and you will lose a lot of the benefit of using a "fitted" tamper. :-/

If you can live without it for a while its best to send the basket to Greg.
    Hes pretty quick though.
Or check with Greg to see is a LM basket will fit your machine. If so, for a few more dollars, Greg will supply you with a tamper and basket and you can keep yours as a spare.

What is (if there is any) the benefit of using a bottomless porta-filter
Also with tampers i have a normal stainless steel one with a convex base
is a flat bottom one better
Was looking through the sponsors section and saw the pullman tampers, they look beautifull.
The bottom design of Tampers seem to be pretty much up to the individual. I have used both a SS convex and a Pullman Tamper. I can honestly say that if your in the market for a Tamper you cannot go past the Pullman Tamper.

My shots improved out of sight after receiveing my fitted Pullman Tamper.

You can probably guess that I love my Pullman Tamper and it has a flat base.

    John,

The foremost benefit is as a diagnosis aid for your tamping.
If you are able to see the coffee pour out of the bottom, you can see if any areas are channeling etc.

I dont have one personally, but some of the members who do say they have been useful.

The other benefit is you can take some pretty cool photos of pours.
