Just been through this a couple of weeks ago.

Our Miele service agent recommended water softener salt, which we
bought from Banner at about $5 for 25kg. Apparently preferable to pool salt.

    Lasts for years.

Or, extremely cheap, swimming pool salt. Very coarse, dissolves relatively slowly, but comes in large bags, around $7 for 25 kg.

    Gday CK,

How about "Rock Salt".... Its normally available in coarse granular form prior to being ground for straight table salt and as far as I know, I does not have added Iodine at this stage. Ive also seen large bags of "Pool Salt" in various places that is also large grain size and does not have added Iodine, and relatively cheap.

    Mal.

    Ah.... thanks for that.

Just checked and it is only used in Miele and AEG dishwashing machines sold in Australia (the others dont have a water softener - which is why Id never heard of it)....

Not sure where you can get that type of salt.... Google turned up a couple of sources for the above from suppliers of dishwashers..... but very expensive for salt!!!!

How do you use it in a dishwasher? It has a water softener built in?

    Hi,

Where can i find granular salt for water softeners?
Coffee machine water softeners use cooking salt..... Just buy it from the supermarket (You can even buy the generic brand if you want to save a few cents).

    Thanks, JavaB!
I remember reading that thread...the yak herder tangent was a beauty!

I have been swapping messages with Robusto on this one and have sent an e-mail to the company that he sent details of. As yet I have had no reply. The product that they sell is a zeolite...not a resin like that is in the water softening unit at present.

I am hoping that a fellow coffeesnob can direct me to a source of the appropriate resin.

    Thanks,
    Paolo.
