Just curious to get CS's view on filter baskets. There are many after market brands that sell then with the intent that they will produce better tasting coffee. Do they really make a difference or is it best to stick with the one that came with the coffee machine?

Maybe read some of the other threads on the same topic..... use the search bar at page top right.
After market filters.........
Full on basket of worms that one; which has been beaten not to death but maybe to a standoff....... for the moment.(?)
In short, yes... it is generally better to purchase an after market filter ..... but the argument revolves around which one. :-D

Almost 500 replies, some for some against, some heated, some pleasant. My own experience is they do change the flavour profile, not necessarily better or worse, but not enough to make any significant. difference. I keeping swapping back to my standard basket from other baskets and realising that providing your technique is right and the beans are fresh then stock baskets can produce great shots.
So to answer your question and I know others will disagree but I don't think they're warranted, however If you could borrow a VST or EP basket you could prove that for yourself.

Agree with barri. Different filter baskets change general window of grind fineness to work as intended. That changes flavour profile. YOUR preference for flavour profile then determines which basket works best for you. Horses for courses.

I'm inclined to say if you have to ask the question, EP HQ is probably the answer, that saidOriginally posted by chokkidog View Postbut the argument revolves around which one. :-D

I think it depends entirely on what coffee machine and therefore what filters it comes with standard....and we dont know what that is, in this caseOriginally posted by ldm720 View Post...Do they really make a difference or is it best to stick with the one that came with the coffee machine?
If it is a machine that comes with the "export" market (ie outside of Italy) deep commercial filters (like most well spec'd commercial machine's), then there is nothing wrong with them. For a good example of std issue filters that should be changed out, it's easy to think of the italian market (shallow) filters supplied with Rancilio Silvia. Due to our larger cuppas and different style of beans used (to Italian market), those std issue filters certainly do benefit to a change to the deeper commercial type already mentioned.
Otherwise, I think posts # 3 and 4 above are pretty much on the money !
