Re: How to Boil Water
Does anyone else remember Andy posting about the "Shark" kettle? It has an LCD temperature display and, from memory, can be set to keep the water at that temperature. Sounds pretty good ...

Re: How to Boil Water
Ive figured it all out.
Its not that it boils slower in Australia, it is because it boils at a higher temperature.
Because we are down-under we must be at a lower altitude than the USA waaaaaaaay up there on the top end of the earth, thus their water boils at a lower temperature than ours.

Ahhh that explains it....Originally posted by Javaphile link=1181154744/0#10 date=1181195127Java "Its all about the wattage!" phile
If its all about the watt age..... no wonder Ive noticed water has been boiling so much faster the last few years!!! They say time flies as you get older!!

Re: How to Boil Water
No, no, no. Because water molecules rotate in the opposite direction down there water boils at 100 instead of 212!

Re: How to Boil Water
I believe these figures are all dependant on whether the kitchen tap is dripping or not!
It can of course be resolved with the following:
t(US sec) = v(US G) * AP(US Apple Pie) + GWB(Current President)
t(AU sec) = v(AU l) * BEER / StubyHld + Ktp(drip=YES) - BS or JH(Bullsh1t OR Current AU PM)

Re: How to Boil Water
2MCM thanks for that infromation, however I note that while you appear to have inaccurately converted imperial measures of time to decimal time where one US second would be equal to 1.15740 decimal seconds in the Australian Decimal Time system.
If boiling at kettle on 110 volts in the US took 2 minutes, surely then in Australia given the 240 volt supply and the different time notation systems the same kettle in Australia with the same quantity of water would boil in 89.45 decimal seconds and produce 1.2 litres of beer.

Re: How to Boil Water
No its the same over there because due to the lower voltage 2.18 US seconds are 1 Aussie secondOriginally posted by steve link=1181154744/0#6 date=1181191556Does the 110V thing mean that electric kettles in the US take longer to boil?

Re: How to Boil Water
Electric kettles have been readily available here in the US for many decades. Places like Target, K-Mart, and Walgreens have long carried them. Theyve just never received much press and only of late have caught on in popularity with an associated increase of the models and brands being available.

Re: How to Boil Water
Electric kettle. Up until fairly recently, not readily available in the US.
On my last visit, I pointed one out to my mum. She was amazed! Shes always relied on the normal kettle on the stove. Its always a case of "Gee, I wish they had those things here." The previous statement applies for both countries.

How to Boil Water
Ok. Ok. Ok. In my office I have an electric outlet. I have a press pot. I have good coffee. I can get water from down the hall.
What can I get to boil water? Im sure theres a quite simple solution. I just havent come to it yet. If a simple hot plate will boil water it will probably take all day. Yes, Ive thought of a microwave... I just think there would be something smaller and less costly.
Assume Im on a budget. (I know at CS "budget" and "good coffee" are mutually exclusive... just humor me ;D.)
And the game is on!
Thanks,
