  • Newbie: Machines in Brisbane

    Hi,
Im horribly addicted to coffee, and looking to buy my first machine/grinder. Id be grateful if anyone could explain to me what features lead to better coffee (i.e. Why is the Sylvia apparently so good compared to say, a Breville [Having used one of the cheap models, Im aware that there is a big difference in quality - Im just not entirely sure why]. Im willing to spend up to about $1200 - but Id like something that is going to make good enough coffee so that Im not tempted to drop another $3K in a few years. Im not ridiculously fussy about coffee..but Id never drink coffee from The Coffee Club, for example, if I could help it.

Is there a good way to learn how to make good coffee? I hear the learning curve can be a bit steep.

Id also like to know if anyone knows of places in Brisbane where you can go and actually taste coffee made with various machines. Looking at them doesnt tell me much, except that chrome and shiny red are very much in fashion.

Cheers, sorry for all the questions!

Try Barazi in Coopers Plains. They sell the Silvia, ECM Giotto, Expobar and Bezzera machines. It sounds like your budget is about right for the Silvia/Rocky combo.

Why is Silvia better than a Breville? Build quality and design. Silvia is a home machine made by a commercial manufacturer. It uses many commercial grade components, that are designed to last. Its solid and heavy, which some take as a sign of quality. But most of all it has a huge internat fan base and there is so much info on this machine, that that alone makes it worth considering.

Best try a shot or two at Barazi. They dont use the best coffee there, but youll get an idea of what it is capable of doing.

    Cheers,

    Mark.
