  • Black or White

Looking at getting my La Marzocco GS3 powder coated, but the dilemma i am facing is if i should go matte black or white.

Love the look of both, and am really torn.

This is what mine looks like now

    in black

    in white

Also, for those that have had powder coating done on their machines, whats it like to keep clean and does it scratch easily?

We do a LOT of machine customising on commercial machines and a lot of powdercoating. Commercial machines are a good test of durability of finishes due to the amount of use/abuse they get in a short time, and we find that black hides scuffs and stains much better than white. White powdercoating tends to discolour due to heat damage over time, and shows every speck of dirt that sits in any fine scratches on the powdercoated surfaces.
We try to avoid powdercoating any surface that gets constant contact with cups, hands, or group handles - drip tray grilles and the vertical panel just below the groups get the worst damage, and we always tell a customer that they will end up looking pretty average quite quickly and recommend they stay stainless.

      My thoughts exactly Morgan.

Take note of black cars, look fantastic when clean, sadly they show every speck of dust.

My feeling is stainless is the ideal case material.

Agree. Of the 3 photos, I like the first best.

White one would be the last choice. Makes it look like a cheap 70’s kitchen appliance.

          Morgan thanks for the tips.
I dont have an issue with cleaning my machines, as even my S/S bodied machines looked like brand new after 10 years.
My concern is more the durability of the powdercoating. Because if it scratches easily, as you say, will look terrible in no time.

Yelta, i love black cars and loved the challenge of keeping mine spotless. I am a bit of a clean freak, as my wife keeps telling me

yea, i love it also, so am going to go ahead with it. Will leave the drip tray top S/S though, just like in the pic, but not because of fear it scratching, but because i think it just looks slightly nicer and blends well with the other S/S bits.

well dropped it off today and should be ready end of next week. Saw a couple other machines there in the same finish and it looks great in the flesh.
The hardest part will be, been without my machine for a week

well i can happily say that the black is so much easier to keep clean and looking good then then S/S
I have owned 2 S/S machines and whilst they were both kept spotless, it was a bit of work, as every little finger print, splash etc etc would show up. You didnt want to be rubbing down too hard either in fear of putting fine scratches.

Since powder coating the new machine, the clean up procedure is so much easier, a quick wipe down with a microfiber cloth at the end of each day and it looks like new.
You dont even see the coffee or water splashes on the machine.
Sure, dust can be seen on it much quicker, but again, its a simple quick wipe with the microfiber cloth and it just lifts it straight off. No buffing to try keep it looking shiny like S/S

Highly recommended, and i think i will be doing it to all my machines from here on
