  • New tamper - improvement or placebo?

I’ve been using a very basic metal double sided tamper for a while on my e61 machine and thought it was ok. It wasn’t anywhere near 58mm, but I thought I was able to cover the entire puck surface with a couple of presses.

I just picked up a 58mm tamper.... and wow! I feel like it’s making way more of a difference than I expected. Am I imagining things? Can it make that much difference?!

It certainly can, learning all the time.

I had/ have a Gaggia classic used the crappy plastic tamper that came with it. Decided to bite the bullet and get a Cafelat to fit. Was though bean bay, but don't think they are there any more.
        Anyway. Bang. Big difference.

la Pavoni. Beautiful machine with famously horrid plastic tamper. This time I sent for a custom fit Pullman. MASSIVE difference.

Current Alex lever. Same. Went the custom tamper even though they come with a reasonable fit proper metal tamper. Again, huge difference.

collecting machines with different sized groups becomes an expensive hobby
