You have nothing to lose then. Heat it up red around the wall and jam in the tamper. Id think it will stuff the basket as the top lip will buckle and not seal.

Pullman MIGHT - I think they do their own baskets, just not sure if they do that size. Maybe worth asking?

Yeah but then will it be too small next time around is the question... ideally if I can find a company who are willing to measure a batch I'd buy 3-4 baskets just so I know I won't have any fitment issues later.

As a follow-on question, is there any place you can purchase 49mm portafilter baskets in specific sizes, like you can tampers (eg 49.4mm)? My previous basket was the one that came with my machine, and this new one is apparently a genuine replacement, and yet the sizing is different (as I imagine can happen with tolerances).

Thanks guys, I think I realised this already but needed some reinforcement. Heh. So frustrating!

I don't think there is a snow balls hope in hell of this working Arcade, the baskets are fabricated out of sheet steel and formed on a brake press or similar, capable of very high pressures.Originally posted by Arcade View PostIf I have a portafilter basket that is ~0.2mm undersize, would it be silly to try enlarging it by forcing my tamper down, perhaps with an interface such as baking paper to assist release and oversize it a tad so it's more free when done?
Or am I asking for trouble by trying this?!
I suspect the easiest and cheapest way would be to buy a new basket of the correct size.

Probably.
Get a new basket or tamper that is slightly smaller/bigger is probably easier.
