  • What a difference 0.4mm makes!

After years of using a standard 58mm-or-thereabouts tamper I finally switched to a 58.40mm tamper to fit my 20g VST basket

Holy puck Batman! What a difference. No change to dose weight or distribution technique, but massive difference in the pour and espresso quality. The tamper base now fits with surgical precision. No vacuum issues though. I'm using a simple vertical, single tamp. No nutation. No polishing. Key observations:
    • Longer time until coffee starts to pour
      Visibly more honey-like
Much, much more consistent flow. Old tamper sometimes produced watery flow indicating channeling
      Denser Crema
More intensity of flavour and richer body

Super pleased! Even better improvement than expected

I had the same results changing to a 58.3mm tamper. So simple, but so good. Never look back haha.

One thing that took a little getting used to with my JoeFrex 58.5 mm tamper: if you position it non-level even the slightest, it tends to get stuck when you release the tanping force. With a little practice, I got it level consistently and haven’t looked back since.

Same here. After upgrading to an E61 machinerecently, I've grabbed a pullman big step tamper and a pullman 19-21g basket. Flavour, viscosity and crema improvements are fantastic.

Are all vat baskets same dimensions? How do I find out mine?

            Measure it?
If you done have a vernier, perhaps take your basket to bunnings and try their vernier
