  • $300 vs. $3,000 Espresso Machine Challenge

Interesting comparison, hardly a scientific test.

Regardless her remark at the end is important "its the grinder" how many times have we heard this statement?

    Yep the grinder.

I cannot help wondering if the difference in shot quality would be greater with a much higher end grinder, though I'm not wearing my flame suit today so will refrain from mentioning any.

Well may I question that outcome ....
I don't knows much but I do know what I read.....

Cause I was just reading, aaggh just the other day
A thread from a Gaggia Classic owner ....
And that certainly wasn't the Vibe coming thru

Of course I could be being mislead !

      Shurely not

Yeah but that 3k allows you to steam at the same time. plus it can be plumbed in, and bang out many coffees faster. it’s hardly fair to reduce the comparison to shot quality.

put that ascasa against the something with preinfusion control though (like the decent; another 3k machine).....much more difference in shot quality.

What a load of rot. She could say anything she likes! Why should we believe it? While I absolutely advocate for the fact that you can make a great coffee with a low end machine people have to remember that these videos are basically advertisements. Maybe not directly, but they’re in the game of selling coffee equipment so they’re not posting videos online as a public service. SCG and WLL have gotta be the biggest hacks online, they’re probably the last place I’d go for reliable information.

She stated it was a rocky grinder.

How going up in grinder quality (i.e. not simply speed)would affect things is an interesting thought. AFAIAC, if the grinder is earlier in the path and it is far more critical than the espresso machine. An average machine can do a good job with a great grinder, no machine can fix a poor grinder's shortcomings.

It's a different portafilter as well as a host of other variables that may effect it including the technique, temperature stability of the espresso machine, pressure of the pour and the grind quality. It also depends on the user knowing how to get the best out of each machine and something tells me a double boiler machine is going to be easier to use if you haven't used it before. My bet is he doesn't spend a lot of time with a $300 machine doing shots...

After all that too there was bugger all difference between the two shots anyway, probably could have tossed a coin.

The good thing with this sort of video is it gives CS members something to talk about when things get boring. Not a bad thing.

How about we go $3000+ machine vs manual espresso makers such as Flair + piston kit* or Cafelat’s Robot * (+ WPM or Bellman for those who want to steam milk).
                      [*yes once released] 🤣[emoji92]

Cool stuff going on in this space without having to fork out big $$$$.
