  • where oh where to start?

My husband and I have been wanting an espresso machine for a while. But where do you start? Were very busy so dont have a lot of time to research or shop around so i just want to know what youd buy if you had $500-$1000 to spend. So theres, a machine, and a grinder, i need a starter kit. We generally like lattes and flat whites. My taste in coffee is getting stronger and stronger by the day.

Ive been reading a lot of the threads, but honestly havent got a clue what half of it means. I dont want to modify any machine, just want to grind the beans and make the coffee, of course it has to taste good.

So please just let me know what i need and what you think i should get with $500-$1000.

    Thanks

    Meg

Small starting point: Spend at least half of that budget on a grinder, one with fine adjustment suitable for espresso.

Avoid anything with crema enhancers or froth enhancers.

And make sure you find a good supply of freshly roasted beans.

      Only 2 choices really...

Silvia (See a site sponsor) and Ibertial Challenge grinder or equivalent

Sunbeam EM6910 and EM0480 Grinder (But since you can stretch the budget to 1K, Id get Ibertial Challenge grinder instead due to its infinite grind adjustment) and since you purchased a Sunbeam, youll get a free course to go with it....

Im sure others can add to there recommendations...

Id second the Silvia as the espresso machine.

Before that I used a Quaha Napoletana II (also sold as a Nemox Dell Opera, Mokita Combi and various other things) and I was quite happy with that too. The Napoletana / Dell Opera has a built-in grinder and theres a non-built-in grinder version called the Junior, Mokita and a few other things. You generally pay around $700-$800 for the grinder version, about $150 less for a non-grinder version. It worked well for me because it looked neat, did the job and didnt take up too much space, but some dont like the integrated grinder because you cant just upgrade the grinder or machine. Id recommend getting the grinder and espresso machine as separate units if you think you may want to upgrade one of them. The grinder was fine for me but it may not be of the standard some others may want.
