    Re: hello all

Hi timetable and welcome to CoffeeSnobs....

My answer (coming from someone with an automatic).....

    A Semi Auto - definitely!!

Firstly great coffee is a very "hands on" manual process.... stopping the pour at the correct time - and that is a visual thing.

But the more serious concerns are reliability and cost.

An automatic is full of electronics - in an environment of heat, water and steam - all the enemies of electronics. Whilst electronics can be made to resist these problems, they rarely are even on extreme machines..... and the more electronics you have, the more likely the failure. And when the electronics fail... most of these machines cant be used...

And after failure of the electronics comes the repair/replacement which is generally very expensive.....

A coffee machine should follow the KISS principle.... the simpler, the greater the reliability (and the better the coffee)....

I use my auto as a semi auto by the way..... and if buying second hand commercials you buy what you can (hence my purchase of an auto)...

    Hope that helps.

P.S..... and DEFINITELY not a super automatic (the ones that grind, dose, tamp and extract.....) you will be VERY hard pressed to get a passable let alone a decent coffee out of one of those!

      Re: hello all

If price isnt a factor, fully Auto definately. You get consistant doses everytime - unless you have flow probs.

Of course that alone doesnt guarantee a good coffee, just that youll get that 15 or 30mls right everytime - not a bad thing.

But, i guess money is a factor when purchasing a machine. The 20% or so discount off an Auto is alot of dosh.

And, as JavaB says, the cost associated with replacing touchpads, Boards, flow mtrs etc.
