  • Self leveling tampers

    Hi Chris..

It mostly comes down to personal choice as to design etc.

Most, if not all, leveling tampers would do the same job, namely give you a nice level tamp, with consistent pressure / compaction (taking into account consistency of dose).

I use the Mahlgut Dozer and it works a treat and removes one less thing you have to worry about. The only issue I had was that as mush basket is only 55mm I have trouble finding leveling tampers to fit.

I should add that I did try the Easytamp but personally did not like it. It felt a bit notchy when pressing down and whilst it did the job it was designed for it was not for me.

    Cheers,

    Alastair

I’m not sure about others but to me the traditional tamping is part of the Espresso making of experience and making it too simple could ruin things a little.
      Maybe it’s just me.. ??

I use the Ezy tamp Pro. The only real advantage is it’s much easier to control tamp consistency if you’re trying to trouble shoot or dial in. Otherwise just push any right sized tamp down till it stops. The grinds are about to get hit with near boiling water at 130psi - much more attention is wasted effort.

Tamping really is a simple process, whilst self leveling tampers may seem like a good idea, most grow out of them quickly and move on to a Pullman, Reg Barber or similar, keep an eye on the for sale forum on this site, self leveling tampers come up quite regularly.

Get yer dose right, light tamp and all will be fine, no magic or gimmicks needed.

The topic has been covered innumerable times over the years, an advanced search for the word Tamping in this forum will yield dozens of threads with tamping in the title, take your pick, its all covered in minute detail.

I have been using a pullman tamper since my first machine but just today received my new pesado portafilter in black bronze so will also order their tamper with the depth adjuster, which can be removed, but for the extra $30 between the normal one and the depth adjuster one, i see it as i no brainer. The depth adjuster can be removed at anytime and be used as a normal tamper.
The main reason for purchasing it though is to match the new portafilter as i am a little ocd with matching things up

Will let you know my thoughts on it once i get it

This is what they look like

I think a lot of us are that way inclined about some aspects of out interest John, will it make a difference in the cup? I'm quite sure you will see an improvement.

                Very nice looking tamper.

I am quite sure it wont make any difference at all, but that it all looks the same will make me feel good
But maybe the easier i can make the process for consistency, the more chance the wife may actually start using the machine every now and again

Don't like your chances! been down that path, interest maintained for a few days, then back to the Mocona jar.
