  • Flow speed when switching to a precision (Pullman) basket

    Hi all,

I recently switched from my stock Expobar Minore IV basket to a Pullman 19-22g basket and have really struggled to get anything other than a gushing flood through it. After a lot of wasted coffee and a ton of time trawling forums for ideas as to what I was doing wrong, I started grinding significantly finer and I seem to be heading back towards decent coffee again.

I'm now grinding so fine on my Mazzer Mini E that I'm topping out the 30 second timer to grind 22g to get a 40g extraction in 30s @ 9 bar. My grinds almost feel like flour, and I'm now switching my Mini E burrs for Super Jolly burrs as they are more aggressive and grind faster.

Wondering if this is normal or matches others' experiences with precision baskets, or have I gone way off track somewhere?

    Cheers,

    Tim

From what I understand precision baskets do require a much finer grind than standard baskets (my Pesado baskets do). But didn't think it would require that much finer (what you're experiencing)... perhaps it depends on the grinder/basket combo..

    And welcome to Coffeesnobs

When was your coffee roasted and how has it been stored?

        Hi EAF,

Using a VST basket with a Mazzer Mini E on a R58 (and previously a Domus Galatea) I concur that the grind is a lot finer and use the double grind button followed by a single grind on the Mazzer to get the 19g I need in the PF - partly because of the fineness and partly because I single dose a pre-weighed 19g of beans into the grinder which means there is no "weight" of hopper beans behind my dose. I find that distribution is critical for me with this set up. Light tamp and no polish results in generally very consistent pours, 30-40sec for 36-40g.

          Many thanks, all!

I've tried with 3 different coffees and roast dates. All within 10 - 21 days from roast. I typically buy 250g bags and store both the unopened bags, and the opened, but cinched shut bags in a cool dark cupboard.

Great to hear that maybe I'm not insane and noonar seems to have similar times on the same grinder. Seems like the Mazzer Mini E is just a super slow beast.

As an experiment I dropped in some more aggressive burrs from a Super Jolly and now my grind time has dropped from 30+ seconds to 11 😲 . Changing the burrs has also significantly reduced clumping, and made the grinds much more fluffy, making the apparent volume of the grinds (same weight) much larger. I got some pretty decent pours this morning with the new burrs, so think I'll stick with them and try to dial in from here.

          Thanks for the feedback!

Was contemplating this modification only a few days back, have also heard stories about the Mini motor not being able to handle the load of SJ burrs.

Has anyone seen a Mini motor fail for this reason, everything I've heard re the subject has always been via the grape vine.

Not personally, but I’ve heard plenty of stories, including here on CS. It’s not a guaranteed way to stuff your Mini, but it could well shorten its life so probably not worth the risk.
I don’t really understand why anyone would want to do this. If you want Super Jolly performance then buy a Super Jolly. They’re a far superior grinder to the Mini and aren’t actually much more expensive. In fact in NZ you can get a manual SJ for less than a Mini E.

Same here! have never read of a Mini motor failing, on this site or elsewhere, have heard of the odd capacitor failing.

If I was buying a new grinder I'd agree. In this case I have the mini already. I may well just buy a new grinder and sell the Mini E
