Well, I thought I had “standard” baskets and had a couple of 58mm tampers which were also “standard”. Not sure if the baskets were a standard 58mm or not but the tampers were loose in the baskets and it was obvious that a larger tamper would be a closer fit. Maybe it’s just what a standard basket is like.
You’re not alone buddy.
I had similar experience and noticed much more consistent extraction time from shot to shot after going from a stock tamper and basket to a 58.5mm tamper and matched basket. I suppose the extra 0.5mm stops water flowing down one side more that the other.

Have had my Expobar Minore III for about three years now, bought second hand, also have a Macap M4D, mixture of espresso, cappucino and lattes, but usual coffee is a double shot latte, mainly used on weekends. Generally pretty happy with results.
I have been using a couple of stock 58mm tampers, and just recently decided to get a 58.5mm flat base Pullman Nexus tamper as there is a bit of slop between the baskets and the 58mm tamper.
To say I am pleased with the improvement in shot quality is an absolute understatement. Beautiful darker caramel stream, thicker, better crema and flavour is up a significant notch. I guess its just being able to ensure that the puck is compacted fully to the edge of the basket, so that there is an even permeability across the puck and no channelling. Definitely recommend this as an upgrade. The Pullman has a walnut handle, so its a nice looking tamper as well!
