G'day JacksterOriginally posted by Jackster View PostI'm not getting a 15, I think it will only take 10g or so before it's into the shower screen. It's not worth taking the risk.
So 18g or 20g. Leaning towards the 20g. Seems easy enough to swap it out on here if it's not what I want. If the flavour hit contains just too much enjoyment...
When is dibartoli doing it's next 30% off sale?
I have a few sets of ridgeless VSTs, and I know some CSrs who can fit 22g into their 7g single, so 15.5g in their 15 is a done deal. FWIW, dosing too far outside the "VST recommended range" always gives me (much) worse results in the cup. YMMV - theirs obviously does.
I guess it comes down to how much of a flavour hit you prefer & whether your grinder is up to it - if it isn't, instant cup of "quinine bitterness".
VST grind is about 30% finer than other baskets (to get their sweet spot / highest extraction ratio), so you get a lot more flavour (at least 30%, more like 50%) compared to other baskets the same size anyway. That is why I switched to singles (after ignoring them for over 40 years!) for my daily cuppa - unless the roast is rubbish, more than the 7g is too much for my tastes.
Anyway, I live in Rockingham and occasionally head to Armadale or Kelmscott so you can try a few of my VSTs and see which size works for you if you prefer. PM me to work something out if you like.

my lelit came with ridged baskets. i know what you mean - even when dosing to the basket's rated size, the coffee came very close to the top, even with a hard tamp.
i'm currently dosing 20g into a 20g ridgeless VST basket, and i can tamp to well below the lip of the basket. so it may be that 15g will clear your test and be a good dose for your cuppa.

Ok, Google gives dimensions for the vst.
My basket is 25mm outside depth at wall. It's actually a pita to measure depth, as I don't know how vst measure the depth (overall external, inside depth at wall, inside depth at middle, external height at wall), it's more than 1mm difference depending where I measure from.... Not that important really...
So, 25mm external at the wall.
Capacities and Dimensions Diameter
VST Dose Height Outside Tamper
Filter (g) (mm) (mm) (mm)
25g Triple+ 24-26 30.0 60.0 58.4
22g Triple 21-23 28.0 60.0 58.4
20g Competition 19-21 26.0 60.0 58.4
18g Double 17-19 24.2 60.0 58.4
15g DBL-EUR 14-16 22.0 60.0 58.4
Won't fit my 15.5g in a 15g vst basket
Either get the 18g and maybe drop dose slightly, or the 20g and increase slightly.

I will get a ridgeless basket, but need the ridge to compare.
Or, I could work it out if I can get the depths of the 15 and 18g baskets...

Vst baskets question
Strongly considering a vst basket for my Musica, currently using 15.5g in the standard simonelli ridged basket. Also using a convex espro tamper at 58mm.
When tamping, in order to pass the 5c test, I end up tamped to just below the ridge, (I actually half tamp, then clear the grinds from the ridge, then full tamp).
I can't decide if I want the 15g, or the 18g basket. I think I'm happy with my 15ish g dosing, but want to make sure it will fit in my selected basket. It seems my Musica has a quite low shower screen.
So, my question is.
With a vst basket, at the nominated basket size, where does the puck tamp down above/below/on the ridge?Tags: None
