  • Hi and Help.

Hi Guys, My first post. Great site. I have dabbled in coffee in the past but recently taken it up a notch with my first E61 machine, a Giotto V1.My knowledge of what I was buying with this machane was limited.
The machine did not come with a tamper and only 1 basket, size unknown but im guessing its at least 20gram.
Anyay I need help deciding on a new tamper and want a new basket to suit.
I spent half the day reading the VST thread and am none the wiser as to diving in this direction.
Im thinking 18 gram may be a good starting point as wife and I usually both have a cup each per brew. (Am I on the right track here ?)
Any advice on where to go from here appreciated. (I have a new Sette 270 grinder. Not W)

Welcome to CS ermat. If you're going down the VST basket path, an 18g Ridgeless basket is where most people start. Usually 58.5mm (or 58.55mm) is quoted as the ideal tamper size to match VST baskets. Pesado make a decent Tamper in this size for around $120. Has a 90 deg edge for max. coverage.

Basket size probably depends on the type of coffee you drink (espresso, latte etc) and how you like it. If you place a cup under each spout of a double spout portafiler you may want to go 20g or larger depending on the largest VST basket a Rocket portafilter will take.

My Vibiemme takes a 20g VST but I need to go to a bottomless portafilter for 22g VST.

Down the track it may also be worth looking at upgrading the shower screen, maybe when you next change the group seal. Pesado and IMS make higher quality shower screens. Cafelat make a good quality silicone group seal for E61 groupheads.
