  • Brewista Smart Scale II Issues

    The scale is starting to misbehave when on the drip tray weighing a shot.

    It turns itself off/on and shows weird weights. Works perfectly on the benchtop, and was working well on the drip tray.

    The scale remains dry, although the drip tray will have hot water in it so is exposed to steam/heat.

    The scale is fully charged.

    Has anyone come across this issue??

    On a side note I dont really like the smaller buttons on the Brewista, they are a but fiddly when sitting on the drip tray, sometimes I dont get the timer to work as I dont press it hard enough / straight down?? This is a personal thing as with age my dexterity isnt what it used to be

    I havent had the issues you have mentioned, but i will now keep a eye out in case it does happen.

    As for the buttons, i tend to agree, I sometimes think ive pressed the timer, only to look back and see i haven't.

    I must admit i find it hard to spend over $100 for a set of scales, hence why i bought these.

      I would suggest it's steam/heat related. Try putting something thin and flat under the scale when it's on the drip tray and see if that helps. Either way it will spell an early demise for the scale if you keep exposing it to whatever is causing this.

        Is the Acaia Lunar any more robust? It is advertised as a drip tray scale and timer

          Mine hasn't missed a beat in 2 years, but I only use it on the drip tray when dialling in. They do apparently die after about a year in a cafe environment when recessed into the drip tray, but for home usage I can't see that happening. It's always a good idea to use the supplied rubber mat to keep the heat away that bit more. That all being said, they are ridiculously expensive for what they are, but nothing else seems to survive as well.

            I have a Felicita Arc which is the same hardware as Acai Lunar used it daily on drip tray for 6 months but only 10 coffees per week. Going strong and no issues so far.

              Thanks. I’ve been meticulous with the Brewista but there is no way it can’t be exposed to heat and steam.

              My preferred workflow is to weigh the output so as exe as they are perhaps a Lunar, or a Felicita Arc as suggested by roosterben, might be the way to go.

              I had hoped the Brewista may have lasted a little longer. It’s only a month old!

                  I use a couple of the cheap Ebay* "coffee scales" in the winery for things that fall between the floor scales and the lab balances.

                  They have so far survived everything thrown at them (sometimes literally) and frankly for about $20 a pop if they break I'll replace them. I generally decry our throw away society but sometimes the cheap Chinese crap actually works.

                    I used the Brewista as well and found the buttons small and hard to press. My workflow is to tare grinds container then weigh the beans before single dosing. Then I tare with a cup and move the scales to the drip tray while grinding. Then when making a double shot I use the second mode which is manual timer and weight. I start the timer once pre-infusion finishes. On both scales I find all other absolutely useless. There would be some which would be good for pour over but they are much too slow and fiddly for espresso. They are crazily expensive but I manged to get a new set for $200 shipped of EvilBay, I think they are worth it. Another option could be the Hario scales, reviews aren't that great for espresso but I think they have timer and weight and big buttons.

                      Forgot to mention I would replace or get a refund on the Brewista as it claims to be water resistant and suitable for use on a drip tray. I would say you have a decent case for a warranty claim if you bought it new.

                        As you would expect, I used the scales on the drip tray today to make 4 espresso, no problem at all. I made sure the drip tray was empty and the machine expelled the water after the pull well away from the scales.
                        As was mentioned earlier I’m concerned the scales are on their way out.
                        I bought them from a site sponsor so yep thanks Ben, I’ve already been in touch with them.

                            What are you doing that sees the scales exposed to steam?!!! No scales will handle steam as it will bypass even the best seal. I’d suggest maybe either an adjustment of workflow is required or a downgrade in scales. I’ve got a set of cheap, no name 0.1g scales that I bought online that I use on the drip tray. They’ve had water and coffee accidentally spilled on them but I never intentionally expose them to steam. They’ve lasted at least a couple of years. I check them for calibration occasionally and they’ve extremely accurate, even after I applied some grip tape to the pad to stop the cup sliding around.

                              Possibly sounds worse than it is, steam from hot water in the drip tray is what I was referring to
