    Re: Basket and tamper compatability

    Bill,

I dont think youre being overly fussy; we promote them as fitted tampers and thats what you can expect, though there will always be a little clearance as a sliding fit is inclined to jam if you skew the tamper ever so slightly. However, even with genuine LM baskets we do get some variations in size, often in the order of a couple of tenths of a millimetre, and when both baskets are ordered and a variation exists, its clearly impossible for it to perfectly fit both, so we have to get the best fit possible in the smaller of the two, which is normally still within spec in the larger of the two and certainly still significantly better a generic 58mm tamper. Incidentally, the existence of these variations is one of the prime reasons for this poll.

    But back on topic...

    Re: Basket and tamper compatability

I voted very unimportant. The most important thing to me is that it fits the basket I’m intending to use as closely as possible. If that means it won’t fit other baskets I may buy later on, so be it. I’ll just order another tamper to fit whatever other basket I may want to use.

I’m actually a little disappointed that the Pullman tamper I bought recently doesn’t fit the LM Double as closely as I was expecting it to. I ordered both a double and single basket with my tamper and the single seems a slightly smaller width than the double so the tamper must’ve been made to be the correct fit in the single. So the result is that it’s a better fit in the single (which I never use) than the double (which I use all the time). I was concerned that this may happen, so I had expressed my concerns before I placed my order and was told that the sizing would be consistent with both baskets so I needn’t be worried. I would’ve preferred the tamper to be made to be a perfect fit to the double (as that’s the one I’d be using 99.99% of the time), and if that meant it wouldn’t fit the single I would’ve preferred the single to be left out of my order (as I only ordered it on the off-chance that I may want to use it one day – I could’ve lived without it).

But I’m probably just being too fussy and expecting perfection. In practice it works fine in the double, it’s just that it leaves some coffee on the sides of the basket after tamping. Since the tamper was being made to be a custom fit, I was expecting it to be a perfect sliding fit that would ensure that no grinds were left on the sides of the basket and tamp right to the very edge of the basket. As it is it feels a bit loose in the basket. I can fold a piece of paper over so it’s 6 sheets thick and it’ll still fit between the tamper and basket. I’m not sure if it’s meant to be that loose or not.

    Re: Basket and tamper compatability

Being creatures of habit, we tend to use favourite things in life. As long as theres a good fitting tamper and basket combo, thats whats going to be favoured.

Were the other basket to be put into service occasionally, I dont think it will be a tragedy if the tamper for that occasional use isnt a precision fit.

    Domestic: Very unimportant.

I bought my new LM basket and had my PT made to fit.
I cant foresee a better basket coming along that would cause me to stop using my current LM/PT combo.

Besides which, the PT fits OK in my other baskets (original sinlgle and double and aftermarket triple).

I am going with unimportant. If the baskets were superior I would probably get two of them, and not use the original ones.

I chose very unimportant! I am finding with my new em6910 that I dont like the single basket so I would think if I found a superior basket I would only want to use that basket because its what you enjoy working with. Maybe my choice would change with my experience over time but I would think single and double basket and 1 tamper to fit both or 2 tampers to cover both. The easier the better I say!

Would never be a concern to me Greg,

Id just buy bases to suit the baskets I owned, what with having several unique and beautiful handles to choose from, I would just fit contrasting handles to various bases to know which is which..... Easy! ;D

    Basket and tamper compatability

    Hi guys,

One thing thats really made purchasing a tamper from me easier in the last 12 months has been the ability to purchase a filter basket and tamper to fit at the same time. Its meant that a number of you have been able to get a tamper that fits without having to be without your baskets for a week or so. Im always looking for ways to improve things so Id be interested to know what your expectations are of such a combination.

As more 58mm filter baskets come onto the market there are more product options, however many of the newer entries are larger than the traditional 58.1mm-58.4mm units. Their larger diameter lends them to larger capacity, richer brews and more resistance to blonding, however it lessens the chance of a well fitted tamper going into one of the older sized baskets.

So. The tamper will always fit the basket it comes with, but how important is it for you that it fits other filter baskets? If you could get a superior basket but sacrifice interchangeability, what would you do? And how important are all these factors commercially compared to domestically, considering the regularity with which baskets may or may not be changed in a commercial environment.

If you work in both environments, respond based on where you spend the majority of your coffee preparation time.

Look forward to your thoughts, and of course feel free to make a thread out of it with your thoughts!

    Greg
