). The coffee certainly improved in taste. If you move to an unpressurised basket you will have adjust your grind as with the pressurised basket the size of the grounds is not as important as when you use the unpressurised lasket. Good luck

The basket you use does not change the pressure from the machine. I started with a similar machine and changed to the Unpressurised basket and made coffee with it for nearly a year until I could afford better (EM6910) and after a while I upgraded again to a Musica ( Danger of being a coffeesnob is upgraditis
). The coffee certainly improved in taste. If you move to an unpressurised basket you will have adjust your grind as with the pressurised basket the size of the grounds is not as important as when you use the unpressurised lasket. Good luck

this sounds dumb but, when these machines say 15 Bar Italian made pump does that mean they pump out at 15 bars to compensate for the forcing of the espresso though the pin hole of the pressurised basket for which they were designed?

Re: sunbeam baskets???
Ive had a Sunbeam Cafe Crema for a few years now and recently tried to convert the basket to non pressurized by cutting through the bottom layer of the filter screen (where theres one hole) and leaving the inside layer of the filter screen in place. But, as others who have tried this may have also experienced, the coffee just gushes through. So dont bother. However, I purchased a Krups non pressurized basket which fits the Sunbeam portafilter and it changed the coffee making experience completely. Much slower extraction but a lot harder to get a good shot now. Ive tweaked my grinder (Delonghi KG100) so that a finer grind is available and Ive tried different tamping pressures. The logic that normally applies (ie: 30lb of pressure and a fine grind) doesnt necessarily apply with these basic machines as there isnt the constant pump pressure to push the coffee through. So lots of experimentation is needed. But I think I have it sorted now and even my worst shot is still drinkable. I modified the portafilter too by removing the inner plastic base, riveting the 2 outer holes shut and drilling out the middle hole larger. Wow, what a difference....lots of crema and an extraction time thats pretty spot on. Now, Ive taken a spare portafilter and with a saw drill converted it into a naked portafilter. Works a treat. Its still a basic machine and the pump pressure is never going to give you a Silvia experience, but I see it as a great training wheels machine that with the mods Ive performed, now requires some technique to making coffee, whereas previously any old coffee and any old grind would provide something that at least looked the goods.

Re: sunbeam baskets???
coffeemumee a pressurised basket will have one exit hole.
Hold it up to the light.
A non-pressurised basket has multiple holes.

Re: sunbeam baskets???
Yep some Krups will fit, also check out the Gaggia Factory baskets if you can find them as they *may* fit.
Not sure about naked baskets, but a naked portafilter is a normal one with the bottom cut off so I guess you could call them that. Non-pressurised would be a more accurate term though.

Re: sunbeam baskets???
do a bit of a search for Krupps baskets, they are the available ones that will fit, I used them in my Sunbeam EM3600 and they were an improvement but I think the shape of the basket wasnt ideal (they have a pretty big taper at the base that isnt as good as a square base)

sunbeam baskets???
hi there, been reading and have seen a few things about pressurised baskets and how they arent great???
i have a brand new sunbeam cafe crema and from what i can gather they are pressuried???
i am pretty happy with the taste of the shots, now that ive sussed out how hard to tamp ect, but they are definatly running out too fast...(30mls in 20-22 seconds) also there are a few spurts as the shot comes out... is this the pressurised basket???
i have read about people cutting out the bottom layer (???) and also talk about getting non pressurised baskets???
are these also known as naked baskets???
some more info regarding this would awesome....Tags: None
