    Papermate.

Specifically with regard to your questions:

"...do they (Silvia) froth the millk adequately?....and what is the average life of a good quality machine? ie. 5yrs for a silvia or is it closer to 10? and for a grinder are we talking about the same?...."

    a) For a domestic machine the Silvia has a ton of steam so if this is a selection critera for you, fear not.

    b) ***Good quality*** domestic pump driven espresso machines (of any brand) last for years and their life span is governed by how much you use them, how "hard" you are on them, and the availability of spare parts and service in years to come. I have people bringing me espresso machines that I sold to them 15 years ago (not Silvias)....we service them as necessary, and they leave, making the same good quality coffee as they did the day they were first purchased.....

I have commercial coffee grinders that are similar age...all we do is replace the grinding plates from time to time and send them out again... Small domestic grinders are a different story, but you are asking about the Rocky, and this is not a small domestic grinder.

Thats not to say that you dont have the odd breakdowns along the way abd with availability of spare parts, that is not a problem. In the end, it is the availability of spares that finally forces an "upgrade" to another machine, thats if you just dont get sick of looking at the same machine for years and just want a change!

I stress however that I dont include appliance brand name coffee machines in the same category as above, where generally, service and parts availability is limited to very short periods only in comparison.

    Regardz,
    FC.

I saw that ad, and I thought exactly the same, twadle! (though not in such polite terms). The whole ad seems a bit suss, since it gives no indication of how used that Lucy is.

    Hi guys,
"... i always drink my coffee with milk - is the silvia or lucy the machine for me? do they froth the millk adequately?"
Papermate, I make milk drinks more often than not, frequently the cheese and kisses and I will have a hot chocolate. The Silvia will easily do enough for two drinks at once, in less time and with a better texture than the lower end jobbies (any bites?) ;D . Down side is if you do more than one jug at a time you have to refill the boiler so there is a delay, but its mot huge.

    Gday,

My understanding of the situation is that a Lucy is identical to a Rocky and a Silvia side by side in the same case. One powercord vs two, apart from that they should be identical. Functionally I cant see why there should be any differences. I keep my beans in the fridge and add as much to the hopper as Ill need for what Im making at the time. Heaters nearby or not, beans will go off if not kept in the fridge so its a good practice for either if youre not making dozens a day.

My recollection was that the Lucy was more expensive than the Silvia and Rocky, which seems odd, but maybe thats why there arent too many out there. Or maybe Rancilio have just worked this out and have revised prices...

Both should be as adequate for frothing milk as each other (300ml boilers in both I suspect, I know thats what the Silvia has anyway). Good for doing a few drinks at a time, but neither are as good as a HX or better type machine as youd need for multiple drinks end to end.

I also drink coffees with milk. I have found the Silvia does a great job, but it is the only one in this bracket I have tried.

Before selecting the Silvia and Rocky, we looked at the Lucy combo. I think it was a little cheaper, though cant recall for certain. Opted for the two piece setup based on the theory if one bit is buggered, none of it is any good, but in hindsight the service available is the same if an individual piece broke.

I couldnt grind fresh beans if the grinder went pear shaped nor could I brew it the machine died. Either way youre without a paddle till it or either component comes back from the shop.

How easy / hard is it to clean the grinder if its "built in"?

Aesthetically speaking, its what the Finance minister directed ;D

As far as I can tell the grinder in the lucy is the rocky. Lucy amounts to no more than a silvia & a rocky in one only body.

Guess it comes down to personal choice on aesthetics & overall size, if nothing else.

Others with combis would be better qualified to answer this, but I would be wary of having beans kept in a grinder warmed by the adjoining boiler. My guess would be the heat would hasten them going stale.

Silvia v Lucy - what am i missing??

Im interested in purchasing a new machine. What are peoples thoughts about a rancilio lucy as opposed to a silvia? does the rocky blow the grinding facilties of the lucy out of the water hence no-one here buying the big sister model?

    Feedback would be much appreciated.
