  • Saeco Magic Deluxe

    Hi All,
Just picked one of these up off a friend!!! My first foray into homade espresso. Yes, it just and auto but its a start!

Now, to my questions...does anyone own / owned one of these? Are there any tips on dosage settings, grind settings, hints for getting good froth? Ive got to go and buy beans today - any suggestions with the roast?

    thanks

    Hello howser99.

The small lever at top inside the door (RHS)....governs the size of the dose......I would set that to the positive side of the middle ie say aorund 2/3 or 3/4 ish.

With an auto the object is to make a full bodied mellow brew, to do that the dose of grinds has to be on the large side.

DO NOT use oily beans in autos, suggest a nice good quality "cinnamon" roast.

DO NOT attempt to emulate the so called "rules of espresso" by trying to tighten down the grind adjustment to try and slow the flow of brew to the 25 ml in 25 seconds rule. Autos dont do that....they flow quickly & thats the way they are. If you try and slow it down there will be three possible outcomes:
    a) choke up the flow, ie no brew!
    b) turn the brew into something that tastes like molten tar (too strong)! OR
    c) it simply will refuse to co operate & wont slow down to that extent anyway.

Watch out for leaking thermoblock. If you hear internal hissing or, if during brewing you start to see the drip tray filling quickly with little coffee breing into your cup, it means the thermoblock is leaking water / steam.

If that happens DO NOT use the machine or it will not be worth fixing when it shorts out. The steam leaking inside the body condenses to water, coats the back of the PC boards, and when there is enough moisture there, it blows the board/s.

That plus the thermoblock, labour & ancillaries then means that for an older machine, it is not worth fixing.

    Good luck.,
    FC.
