Re: Atomic on EBay?
These are things of great beauty, but, as stated, just a Bialetti sort of arrangement. My parents had two of them when I was growing up in the sixties - they both failed because the (black or red) bakelite/plastic screw-in plug thing becaame fused to the body because it is supposed to be removed when not in use. Atomics are the sorts of things that can turn a person on to good industrial design, and they are keenly sought because they are basically a piece of art - but also the perfect example of form following function. It looks the way it does BECAUSE of what it does. You are buying a design icon, like an Eames chair or the Noguchi coffee table (my avatar). You will notice that most people trying to flog them on eBay refer to them as "being made by Brevetti", when all that word means is "patent".

Hey Tim,Originally posted by Tim link=1116317000/0#2 date=1116324178Do they make a decent coffee?
Are they something like a Bialetti Moka pot in function?
Yes, the Atomics are basicly a moka pot. Ive heard they make a pretty good coffee as moka pots go, but espresso machines theyre not.

Re: Atomic on EBay?
Dont knock the old ATOMICS, they can make a pretty good cup of coffee and steam some OK milk to boot.
I have a few in my collection and have used them for over 20 years.
OK, so now they have become a collectors item and like anything else that is retro you expect to pay a bit more for it. Money could not buy my unused bright ORANGE one.
How much is an original E61 single group worth these days ........$8K to $10K

Re: Atomic on EBay?
Ive just recently acquired one through friends who said it was taking up space in their cupboard. It was also missing a part which I bought for $25 here in Sydney at the only place in the WORLD that sells these machines (when they can get hold of them).
Anyway, on a close inspection the machine is a work of art plus an engineering miracle made out of aluminium. But as a coffee machine it is in the same league as say the Bialetti moka pots. I have not made a coffee with it yet for it needs a massive internal clean. But even it it were clean I would be disinclined to use it. It is extremely primitive, with big holes, eratically spaced in the shower screen. It would take a very course grind, and basically spits out coffee into an aluminium pot at boiling point temperature. Crema? It wouldnt know the meaning of the word.
So coffeewise it cannot compare to a Pavoni lever machine, let alone a Silvia, even though it sells for the same price as these second hand. There value is in their perceived aesthetic attributes, though personally I prefer things out of brass (like Pavonis and Elektras) or stainless steel (like Diademas, and Giottos) to any coffee machine in aluminium.
In summary, atomics are for the artgeeks, not the coffeegeeks. The coffee they make could not possibly compete.
