Re: My new tamper #1803
We dont use it for tracking though if we got enough info it could be used for that; we measure and weigh each tamper base before theyre sent out and this info is kept in our database. The informations rarely needed but it comes in really handy when people come back to us later and say "Ive got tamper XXXX and it fits my mates baskets perfectly, can you make one the same for him?" and we then dont have to worry about getting baskets or whatever - we can essentially clone the one which is deemed to be an acceptable fit by the client. Its also very useful in helping us decide what size base to make in the event we dont get filter baskets sent to us - we can look at cases where we have made a tamper to fit a basket of a particular machine and check out all the details if necessary and get a good idea of what we need to supply. It also gives us a good idea of whether a particular machine has a history of large variations in basket sizes, which would cause us to rely less on our figures and push more strongly for baskets to be sent in or purchased for the job - so the final size we supply is based on a number of factors, our own experience and a bit of intuition. This last point tends to make us roll our eyes when we read / hear blanket comments such as Im tellin ya, La Cimbalis take a 58.1mm tamper, I measured it myself so I know dude! Theyre some of the little benefits you get over some other products on the market, even those made by well-respected manufacturers.
Hehe! Yes and no - number 1 would be the first Vanilla tamper I made for my Napoletana if it had a number (which thankfully didnt get sold with the machine so Ive still got that at home). But initially they didnt get serial numbers - after Id sold a few I did think of numbering them but didnt initially bother cos I could remember who had them all and what size they were, and doubted thered be much of a market for a non-disposable item such as a tamper. I eventually started numbering them once I hit about 30 or so sales just in case it went a bit longer than I expected. :
