    Re: Thor tamper

    Thomas,

If youve got issues with it not fitting one of your baskets, return it to me with the basket and Ill resize it for you. Its difficult to guess exactly whos got what size basket, so slight misfits do occur from time to time if I dont have the baskets on hand at production time.

The Thor tampers are certainly attractive, but in terms of longeivity and hygeine I wouldnt think wood to be the best product for tamping. I know hes got some artificially weighted ones to get around the inherent lightness of wood, but Id think a stainless or brass base would be the way to go, which is heavy, inert, wipes clean quickly and wont absorb germs or rot.

    Tom

Coffee is a natural product why not use a natural product to tamp it. We only use a Timber tamper here.

When you request dont for get to think about a Convex or Flat Tamper and specify how much curve you require..

BTW this is a one off, each tamper is different, and cpome with any problems that Timber usually comes with....Keep it away from heat.

    Re: Thor tamper

Pardon my newbie-ness ... but I didnt think that Tampers could be made from wood entirely. All the tampers I have seen are either plastic or stainless steel.

I would have to go home and measure the basket ... and let you know soon. Thanks

Tom let me know the actual size you need for the Tamper. ie less the ridge. I have some Aust Hardwood here and I can Turn you up one if you want. Just send a message to Rich or Rae and tell them what you want. Cost wise its not much, do you want a lacquered base or Polished Base?
"Have Lathe can do anything" well at least I hope so. ;D

    Hi Gary,
I also ordered a Tamper from Greg ... however I have found that it does not fit the single basket due to the ridge. Works fine with the double basket.

Do you know where I could get a ridgeless basket for the Gaggia Classic?

    Rgds

    Re: Thor tamper

I have a Thor Tamper as well. I believe the spelling is Myrtlewood, although he does make quite a few variants. I picked mine up whilts in the states last year.

I think the hor tamper is as much a work of art as a usefull addition to my tamper collection.

Wny? Well firstly the all wood tamper doesnt take kindly to my tamping style. Maybe im the problems.
Obviously hitting the tamper on the portafilter to remove grinds from the outside of the basket is out, else you would soon have a very sad looking tamper indeed.
Secondly the "twist" of the tanper that I normally use to shine the pre-infused puck is not particularly functional either. I found that the coffee is abrasive on the soft bottom of the tamper, and the first few twists take off the polish. Later the abrasion of the bottom of the tamper increases and eventually the tist actually tears the puck up...

So the Thor tamper lives on the shelf above my fathers coffee machine at his place (i actually got the tamper for him). He appreciates things of beauty, much more so than i, and he isnt es exacting on his coffee standards so he uses to tamper on occasion.

Its a lovely thing tho )

    Regards,
    Dane

    Thor tamper

A few moments ago the mailman came with my new Thor tamper from America. I tried it out (of course). I had a ristretto - was there a difference from Reg Barber? - I dunno Anuway next I want one of the Australian ones made out of Jarra. Why? I dunno
Now I have Silvias original plastic one, an aluminium one, a Reg Barber stainless steel one, and a Thor all wood one (Myrtlefood) (sp?)
Somehow I think I was better when I was young and silly!
