  • Breville ikon

Hello there! Some time ago Ive bought Breville Ikon coffee machine. Now I wonder, how to make more hot coffee with it. Could you guys share your experience with it?

The problem is, its making "ok" temperature coffee. Its isnt cold, but in my opinion it isnt hot enough. Im sure that my previous coffee maker from Saeco make more hot coffee.

    Gday spacer,

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs mate.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Do you have access to a thermocouple input Digital MultiMeter by any chance spacer? Very difficult to make any kind of judgement unless we are talking about specifics :-?,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

      Hello Mal.

Looks like I dont have an access to such device. I even didnt here about them

So I need to understand is there a problem in some other more easy way =)
      Is there any?

boil some water in a kettle, then pour it into a cup. Wait 20seconds then dip your finger into it. If its hotter than your espresso straight out of the machine then you might have a problem with the ikon and you should investigate further.

Are you letting the machine warm up for long enough? Do you heat your cups with some hot water before doing shot?
          Worth a try!!!

Most machines can only approximate the water temperature with sensors located outside the boiler. This creates a lag in sensing water temperature during extraction producing bad ‘pour’ and inconsistent crema. To avoid this we immersed an electronic control thermistor thereby constantly sensing water temperature during standby, extraction and steaming. The result is a flat temperature curve for precision coffee extraction delivering continuous water at 92°c. The heating element is specially engineered and positioned producing fast 60 second heat up from cold and even heat distribution providing instantaneous extraction and fast delivery of commercial strength steam pressure.
            Information from:
            http://www.designawards.com.au/application_detail.jsp?status=4&applicationID=834

You should be able to troubleshoot your ikon with this information. When your machine is ready to go, test to see if the water is coming out at 92 degrees.

If you still want to adjust the thermistor you will have to change the thermistor to a higher value. Which might be hard since it is immersed in the boiler, you might run into sealing issues when its all back together. Keep in mind that the thermistor used would have a positive temperature coefficient, meaning the hotter it gets the higher the ohms.

Plan B might be to place a potentiometer in parallel with the thermistor to reduce the resistance output value which will make the boiler work harder to obtain the 92 degrees, but  in fact the water will be hotter then that. Using the potentiometer you will be able to fine adjust the resistance to obtain the water temperature you want.

Plan C might be to get into the electrical brains of the Ikon and adjust the resistance from there. In either case you will either need to lower the resistance before it gets to the boiler contol unit or adjust the unit itself.

From an engeering point of view if you increase the boiler temperature from what it was intend for, there might be safty risks or at the least you will burn out the machine before its time.

These are just quick thoughts if you wanted a few ideas, im sure there are a few holes in my ideas, still a newbie in the world of coffee.

            Cheers,

            BonKeRS

what extraction time for 30 mls do you have. could be a simple problem of the coffee being too coarse.

              do you heat your cup

how long do you warm the machine up before making coffee

do you put the handle in the machine and run hot water through it before using

do you use a thermometer when frothing milk to ensure correct milk temp

do you make the coffee before heating milk. if so try doing the other way round.
the coffee loses temp quicker than the milk

Ive try to day that and looks like water is more hot that coffee. It even hotter than I wanted coffee to be. I think it about 92 degrees like specification sad.
And I dont know why but coffee isnt as hot. Do you have any suggestions what should I investigate next?

It takes about 11-12 second to fill in 30 ml. But that is with time for fill coffee with water and pause at the beginning. So without that its less.

Yep Im usually heat the cup by fill it in with water before.

It takes about a minute to warm up the machine. Ive tried to wait about 5 minutes more but a result is the same.

Im still experimenting with espresso so I even didnt try to make milk with it.

So guys, what can I do more if I dont have thermocouple input Digital MultiMeter?

                  Spacer

Forget about the thermocouple for now, I think youve answered this one yourself.

It may take a minute for the machines boiler to reach brew temp, but the brew path, grouphead and PF will be stone cold and therefore suck all the temperature from the water when you pull the shot.

Give the machine at least 30-40min to warm up with the PF inserted.
The PF should feel too hot to touch for more than a couple of seconds.

Before you make any coffee, run a blank shot through the PF, you can use this water to heat the cup.
Whilst the boiler comes back up to temp, you can grind and tamp etc.

Also, your extraction time suggests your grind is too course.

You want 30ml in 25sec for a single or for a double [60ml in 25sec] timed from when the extraction appears at the spouts.
This is using a tamp pressure of 13-15Kg [which you can measure using bathroom scales]

Good luck and Let us know how you go.

Oh. Thanks. I will try that one.
I guess I though that coffee machine with steel boiler is the same with one with thermo block. My Saeco worked straight after 1-2 minutes with good temperature although it was twice cheaper. But it was made from plastic.
