Re: Decisions Decisions???
I to will soon be in a position of isolation (NT) and also have this predicament. I think I have also decided on the Silvia/Rocky combo. I think it will be well worth it for the good coffee and espresso. Just hope the hot and sticky wet seasons I am about to experience dont play havoc to much with the coffee beans. Would be interested if anyone has any experience with this.
Cheers
Rosey

Re: Decisions Decisions???
Thank you all for your imput and advice - I guess it has to be the Silvia/Rocky combination, it makes good sense in my situation - a little more than I wanted to spend, but after a prolonged period of facing each day without my morning fix, I find that money becomes less of an issue (is that addiction?) Ill place my order Monday morning and begin the learning curve.
cheers,
Malduin

Re: Decisions Decisions???
I hadnt thought about this before, I guess if you leave a full hopper it could be an issue. On my Napoletana but I usually just add enough beans for each shot and as it has no doser then theres no prob there. Out of interest Ill stick the thermocouple in tomorrow morning to see what the temp gets up to.Originally posted by 2muchcoffeeman link=1124435328/0#3 date=1124450458Would STRONGLY recommend that you avoid any sort of combined solution- combi included. The outcome is stale beans because they get heated by the boiler....regardless of insulation- if any. Get yourself a good machine and a stand alone grinder- eg. the sylvia lux/rocky pair. You wont regret it...
Id still normally recommend seperates though. I ended up with my second hand Napoletana as it was too good a deal to pass up on but after a weekend away using the Napoletana I always look forward to returning to the Cimbalis.

Re: Decisions Decisions???
Hi Malduin,
Have to agree with 2MC. Any type of combo ties you into hardware that makes it hard to upgrade/change in the future, as well as the issue with "turbo-staling" your fresh beans. Ive got a Mokita stand alone espresso machine and a Rocky grinder, the theory being that the Rocky will survive several upgrade cycles of the espresso machine but not the other way around.
The Mokita/Fenice/Quaha is a good little performer and a very capable machine. It is basically the same under the bonnet as the Silvia but uses high pressure Teflon tubing instead of the Silvias Copper tubing. Also, the Silvia uses a professional/commercial quality Group and PortaFilter where-as the Mokita and kindred use a proprietry, more lightly constructed 57mm Group and PF. The Silvia also uses a solid all-steel chassis upon which all the hardware is mounted where-as the Mokita, etc use a Unitary construction with everything mounted to the self supporting s/s panelling. As a result, the Silvia weighs more than twice the Mokita and is in reality, a commercial machine scaled down for domestic use... its all quality.
You can read a very good side-by-side comparision of the two machines here... http://tinyurl.com/8gemw.
All the best,
Mal.

Re: Decisions Decisions???
I think all those single boiler machines are the fail safe machines as there are hardly anything much in them anyway. I think that this is a good thing if you are in the middle of nowhere.
I would go for the Silvia/Rocky combo unless it is out of your price range. Very good quality and if you want to trade up at some point, it would probably give you the best resale.
I sold my Silivia to get this huge beast, the Bezzera and lost about $100 on what I paid for it and it took me one day to sell it.
Again the Rocky is the cheapest grinder that I would recommend. I have seen the lux but I dont like it and dont consider it good value for money but that is just my opinion. I would go simple, bulletproof, good quality and good resale. You cant beat the Silivia/Rocky combo.

Decisions Decisions???
Hi,
As a newbie to the art and now living in an isolated part of the country as far as decent coffee and maintenance facilities are concerned (NW Tassie) I am missing my regular hit of decent coffee and so am keen to start making my own. Consequently I need a dependable machine that is driveable and not prone to regular breakdowns. At the moment I am torn between the Imat Mokita Combi and the Rancilio Silvia, the Mokita seems to have some advantages in ease of use as well as the incorporation of a grinder. I have also come across two other machines the Nemox Caffe dellOpera and Napoletana which apart from some cosmetics appear to be identical to the Mokita - most confusing. I guess what I am after here and would really appreciate is some experienced advice.
