  • Intermittent "snapping" switch sound. Normal?

Hi, i recently got hold of a EM0480 to grind for my EM4800.

My first few trys were disasters as i ground too fine. Setting 12 on the grinder.

At one point the portafilter disengaged and coffee spilled out everywhere!

Now i hear this snapping switch like sound coming from the machine after ive turned it on. It occurs at totally random intervals. It sounds like a swich being flicked on. A single sound. "Snap!"... "Snap!"...

Any ideas to the possible causes for the sound? Ive felt the case vibrate slightly when the sound is made. Yup, its quite loud.

When the machine is heating up, ticking noises are normal in sunbeams.

    Snapping? Vibrating? hmmm

Was it "snapping" before the coffee explosion incident?

when it happens is the machine
      being used or
      has just been used
      or just turned on

      need more details

No it is not vibrating... what i meant was that i could feel the snap when i put my hand on the case.

The sound is present after switching the machine one, prior to use.

After use, even if left standing for awhile, the sound returns.

Hard to say without hearing it but it sounds a bit like the sort of sound you may get with a bean jumping around the burrs without actually getting pulled in; if it was this (or something come loose in there) the timing would be random but would occur quite frequently, i.e. at least once a second.

            "-.-

just noticed i should have made it a little more clear.

I am referring to the Sunbeam Cafe Crema EM4800 coffee machine... Not the EM0480 grinder.

edited: I just noticed, the sound appears intermittently even when switched off. for some time. Then it stops.

Is it like the sound of your car in the garage after youve turned it off and everything metal starts shrinking back to form. As in is your machine expanding and contracting under the change of temperature?

Well my Sunbeam EM6910 makes intermittent ticking noises when its left on, which I assume is some sort of thermostat cutting in and out to keep the machine warm?

                  thanks for the replies guys

Yeah, it is like a ticking noise... it is most frequent when the machine is warming up.

Sometimes, when im close enough, i can even hear a tick and a spring release sound.

Prob just a thermostat or something.

Will call sunbeam anyway just to make sure.
