Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
I would like to know whether any parts are made in
Japan,Germany, Italy or England
All countries with a long history in manufacturing and a standards system
Standards being the key ingredient
Or do the makers subcontract/outsource to the cheapest bidder/maker
And is there any R&D in basked development or do manufacturers just consider them as strainers ??
Questions questions need some answers

Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
I was going to go with Dennis on this one luca.
In theory, what he says about more stringent requirements, Id agree with.
And your "suspicions" arent facts.
However, I once bought some welsh plugs for the engine block of my old Ford Escort.
Similar in shape to a basket; pressed metal cup shaped things.
Well despite the hefty price that comes with a "Genuine Ford Part", they were pieces of cheap cr@p. They werent straight i.e. they were a different depth all around, not straight or square, whatever words you understand to get my meaning.
I ended up going to a little engineering workshop I think it would be called, a few minutes down the road from the Ford place and for a lot less money bought some top quality, well made plugs.
To top it off they were brass not cheap mild steel.
They were going to outlast the engine.
So Im going to side with you too luca. What you said may not be fact but theres a good chance you may be right.

Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
Hi Dennis,
Well have to agree to disagree on that point. I suspect that manufacturers select from generic parts that are freely available. When it comes to baskets, I dont think that any baskets are exclusive to any manufacturer, with the exception of some baskets that are stamped with the machine manufacturers name.
Cheers,
Luca

Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
Gee, thats some memory youve got there Luca! I have trouble remembering my... ;DOriginally posted by luca link=1211780411/0#3 date=1212061427I got my Synesso basket from Synesso in the USA for $7USD, but thats only economical if youre already getting other stuff posted from them.Originally posted by andrew link=1211780411/0#0 date=1211780411Where do people get their baskets?
I got my first LM ridged double basket from Coffeeparts for $12 or so quite a while ago. I think that it was part number 300013. I got my second one from work - the basket was supplied by BFC, but Im sure that its the same.
People should be aware that neither Synesso nor LM actually manufacture their own baskets. In fact, it wouldnt surprise me one bit to learn that all manufacturers outsource the baskets. This means that it is not worth paying a premium for brand names. The ridgeless double that I got from Synesso struck me as identical to the ones that I used to use in the Azkoyen at Maltitude, so if I wanted a ridgeless double basket, I would be contacting Diamond C.
Hope that helps,
Luca
Agree that paying a premium for a brand name might not be worthwhile at times, but certainly not on the basis that its outsourced. I would think that brand name owners are more likely to have more stringent requirements when it comes to the manufacturing of a product they then brand as their own.

Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
I have actually weakened the spring that holds my basket to make it easier to get out and clean. So I suspect that a ridgeless basket should be fine with the existing spring.
What do you do with your PF handle that would be likely to dislodge the basket?

Re: Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
Gday andrew,
A lot of people are very happy with Synesso "ridgeless" baskets in the Silvia which just happen to be almost identical to the Bezzera baskets from what I can tell. Most 58mm commercial baskets will fit in the Silvia PF but like you have already mentioned, may require a stronger spring in the case of Synesso types that have no ridge.
I like my Bezzera baskets (without a ridge) as they are easy to tamp consistently, knock-out spent pucks easily and simple to clean, etc. The double typically holds a shade over 18g with the method I use but is nominally a 14g basket so I spose you could extrapolate this margin with nominally larger baskets,
Cheers,
Mal.

Filter baskets from Coffeeparts
Hi again,
Where do people get their baskets?
I am wondering about compatibility and reviews of the filter baskets available on coffeeparts - I notice you can get various 12, 14 and even 18gr double baskets and a couple of larger single gram baskets via the group handle and group head spare parts section of various brands..
I.e. the marzocco page has:
300013: Original double filter 14gr for $12
521994: a (presumably noname) filter 14gr for $ 7.75
700757: a (noname?) 18gr filter for $ 12.50 - does this only work with naked PF due to size?
The gaggia page has a 14gr double (700256) at $14 - is it better?
with the 18gr basket and the three way spout on the same page (618522) you might be able to make three decent coffees at once(!?!?) never seen that three way before
there is also a 7 gram single filter (521830), and a 12gr (516575), the 12 might be good for singles?
Will any/all of these work in my silvia - and which baskets do other CSers have?
Also I know Greg Pullman sells synesso (cant find these on coffeeparts) - and they seem reasonable priced (~$15) but require a new spring also.
It seems there is no definitive answer for which basket to use.. but I would love to know if CSers have tried any or all of the above and how they rate them.Tags: None
