  • Have you made a tamper?

Have you made your own tamper?

Was it successful and do you still use it?

    Attach a photo if possible.

Would be great to see all your examples and creativity!

I haven’t made a tamper as such but recently I’ve 3D printed a collar that is held in between then base and the handle so to create a level tamp

      That's neat!
The tamper itself looks decent. Is it a two piece?

Yeah just a cheap two piece tamper. I think it was from Rhino

I think you’re probably wanting to see tampers that people have made from scratch one way or another. I don’t have one of them, but I do have one that I put together using a refurbished handle. Last year sometime I picked up a second hand Impress tamper for about $10 as it was looking a bit rough. Impress tampers have been a common sight in cafes here in NZ for a long time and you can often score old ones free or very cheap. I cleaned up the base and put it on another spare handle that I had and have it tucked away in the cupboard. It’s 58.0mm on a good day so not quite big enough for my liking. The older handle was looking pretty rough so I sanded it back and repaired a couple of small cracks then gave it the custom paint job you can see below. To finish it off I bought a 58.3mm base off AliExpress and have been using it ever since. I like the look and it’s nice to use so I think it’ll be with me for quite some time.

I made my own tamper from scratch a couple of years ago in order to perfectly fit my portafilter basket on my BES800, turned it out of wood.
Worked brilliantly and used it for years until I bought a new machine with different sized baskets

I made this one for a precise fit with my Rancilio baskets and have been using it for many years. Click image for larger version

I wanted a slightly larger tamper for a new basket so I thought I'd try making something a bit different.
The handle is a 3d printed model of the Moon from a Nasa displacement map.

Here are a few I've made. I've got a few metal lathes and a wood lathe so have made a few tampers over the years. These are Tassie speciality timbers - Huon, Myrtle, Blackheart Sassafras and Eucalypt burl.

Nice work Hornetb. And thanks for posting pics. Beautiful to look at.
Oh and don't be at all disturbed by Yelta's turn of phrase!
He's as straight n true as they come.

G'day Yelt's! Ya prob missed the recent 'disturbance's ' here with another cple of newby imposters starting up one of those well beaten up 'Import' threads again and spraying hollow costs statements with half the real costs conveniently left aside. But we've seen it all before...Hey!
                      Oh dear .....

Stunning! I've been carting a nice chunk of blackheart sassafras from place to place for nearly as long as I've had espresso gear; when I grab a precision base for the new 55mm gear its time will be nigh. Beautiful timber, and a lovely tree to boot!
